I think that THE BEST source of dub information on the internet has to come from this archaic piece of Web 1.0:

I think there is one.. try subforum maybe
Re: dub techno tutorials and tips
Thanks for these. I watched them and then went and made sounds that were nothing like what was made in the videos. But without them I wouldn't have come up with the sounds that I ended up making - weird (in a good way)!!
Re: dub techno tutorials and tips
Any tips on making dubby basslines? My stuff always ends up too hectic, then when I try to make something a bit more sparse it just sounds boring.

Bionic_Eye: I fixed your link. When you embed a youtube video you don't put the whole url, you just put in the id of the video.
So not: "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NMV6sZbd2g"
Just: "0NMV6sZbd2g"

theres not much on the tube so here is my crappy tips - im not super great on basslines yet and im not always happy with mine but :Barfunkel wrote:Any tips on making dubby basslines? My stuff always ends up too hectic, then when I try to make something a bit more sparse it just sounds boring.
less is more . many of my basslines are 2 or 3 notes . often a root , octave and 1 "chord or scale"note (minor 3rd or a 5th for example , i dont know the right term) . rarely would I have a run of 4 or 5 notes . occasionally yes , but generally strip it down
bassline at half time feel . most are whole notes , occasionally a half note pushed in somewhere for a bit of movement . put your bass notes on "off beats" to your kick where you would often put your hats on the half step . it gives that shifting movement feel .
air and space . most basslines are spread over 2 bars sometimes 4 and have a lot of air . the bassline is at the end of the 2 bar loop . with your stabs at the front of the loop this gives counterpoint between them and movement across the loop .or shift them around with bassline at the front , put you stab on an offbeat down the loop . whatever but this is probably the most important bit . space!
a little variation . often I will repeat a 2 bar phrase and change slightly the in the 2nd repeat on the 4th bar . its often just dropping a note , adding a new note on an octave or the root note , shifting a note a half note forward or backward . again it gives a sense of movement and that sort of rocking shifting feel
an example of most of that in a really simple bassline
sometimes I might not even have that , it could be just one root note like this
a realy quick and basic sound example of both . done in like 2 mins dont expect to much here
sound choice and placement comes into play a lot . if the track is dense and the subs are really low without attack definition , 1 or 2 hits of single note is all you need . were really adding weight and feel more than defined notes. if the track is more airy or soft or more house-y you might have a more attacked bass sound and more complex bassline
as with everything completely disregard all of this and experiment with the exact opposite until you find what fits.
there are a lot of dub/reggae bass vids on youtube , lots of those apply to
