which synth ???
which synth ???
I'm thinking about to buy my first synth. I'm tempted towards an Analog 4 as it seems to suit my workflow, is capable of FM with the new update plus Overbridge seems to be facken handy for someone who never owned hardware.
Any other suggestions in the 1200,- EUR price range?

Re: which synth ???
Wel for that money i guess, you could take a look at the acces virus or one of the dsi synths.
Though i think elektron is a bit different, they are one of the few brands with a clear view towards the future, the machines are made for the modern age. They learned from all the synth knowledge of the past and actually innovate each fucking time. For that money you you wont find something simular, option wise.
I own the A4 and though ive just scratched the surface, im loving every inch of it. From the design to the synth engines. And overbridge, well thats just a revolution to be honest.
The A4 can sound a bit meh sometimes, just like my Md. But thats purely the mistake of the user, if you know how to enhance up that sound it will surely sound fat as hell.

Re: which synth ???
It depends a lot on what you are after with a synth. The Elektron A4 is probably the most versatile and "smart" synth in that price range. Alume summed that up pretty well. The new Korg Minilouge looks quite nice too. Very immediate and fun. But by far not as flexible I would say. Another question to ask is why you wanna buy a hardware synth? Just for the experience of playing an instrument instead of using the computer?

Re: which synth ???
man, DSI prophet.. possibly biased towards dsi since they are california.. but curtis chips are the bee's knees. i have an a-4 and an evolver and they pretty much do the same thing the a-4 is essentially trying to be 'berlin school' (for lack of a better term) and i have to say that the evolver sits better in the mix, which i hated at first since it sounded kind of mid range, but it's like perfect.. the evolver can be made sound more unique it also has some wicked distortion in it and sounds super tech... i can imagine the prophet seems like a lush ad gorgeous synth from a guy who's had decades of experience at it and the synths are almost timeless at this point.
i've not had a chance to really dive into the a-4 but i do like the layout for making and performing stuff so in that respect it's less set and forget type of synth but i think that stuff like dark reverb etc. will be really dated in a few years. the analog four is that thing that's in vogue now i think in a lot of tracks. it's the sound of now. but will it hold weight in the long run?

Analog Rytm?
-12slots/8 voices
-samples>single cycle waveforms>>monosynth(s)
-scenes
-performances
-pads
-fx muting
-decent bass, if you like that kind thing at all... I know I don't.
-deeper than it might seem

Re: which synth ???
For techno, A4 is great (though do listen to demos, not everyone enjoys it's sound). Only if you plan on using it's internal sequencer though, which is really good and makes the A4 a real self-contained instrument. I'd absolutely never get it if I were to sequence it from another sequencer. You could get lots of synthage with 1200€ nowadays! Instead of one expensive synth, you could get something like Roland Boutique JU-06 (300€), Korg Volca FM (150€), some cheap-ish analog mono like the Vermona Mono Lancet (400€) and still have money left to buy yourself a nice FX unit or something!

Re: which synth ???
Well, as for buying more but smaller/budget gear: No !!! I'd like to have ONE quality peace of gear. It'll take enough time (which I don't have atm) to learn it inside out instead of buying several toys (my opinion of the Volcas) and learn them all at once.
I noticed the opinions over the A4 sound but I couldn't care less as I will fuck up the sound with effects anyway. Just don't make sense to me to buy me a Moog single Osc synth ONLY because it sounds huge. I mean Strobe 2 sounds fat as fuck and covers all my needs for mono subtractive synthesis.
I feel confirmed to the A4 and will check it out in a store soon. Thanks gentlemen.

Re: which synth ???
Congrats on the decision! A4 is a fine synth, as long as you don't expect it to do things it can't and enjoy it as it is.

Re: which synth ???
Yeah I mean, I watched shitloads of A4 videos and I understood the synths architecture quite well. Then they announced Overbridge and I was like "that's interesting". And now the FM update, elektron really seem to have a future plan which is good imo.
I was just curious if there is something similar out there.

Re: which synth ???
Can't think of anything that would have 4 analog monosynths in one box + an excellent sequencer + good FX. The A4 is quite unique in it's concept.Mono-xID wrote: I was just curious if there is something similar out there.

Yeah A4 is cool and perfect for techno, but I think the actual oscillators are bit dull sounding imo, go try one out for yourself in town.... I think justmusic has them.
Otherwise you could get a few things instead of one thing... like Minilouge + Tanzmaus would be a great combination.
Anyway you don't make techno anymore so go buy a fucking guitar!

I'm already covered with guitars. I stopped techno, not electronic music in general.msl wrote:Yeah A4 is cool and perfect for techno, but I think the actual oscillators are bit dull sounding imo, go try one out for yourself in town.... I think justmusic has them.

The Minilogue doesn't bother me at all to be honest plus I'm not interested in a drum machine at the moment. Have to see how the hardware workflow suits me first.

Re: which synth ???
No idea. Just ordered it. It's mainly for live use though. If I was getting something for the studio it would be more knob per function type of thing. Otherwise a4 is like using ableton on a tiny screen.Mono-xID wrote:How you like it so far Steve?Lost to the Void wrote:I just bought one myself.
Re: which synth ???
I've got a track with an A4 bassline in the members track section.
The atmos and the bassline are all A4, no editing done to the bassline in ableton, just some reverb to the pads and the "drops" though.

Re: which synth ???
Elektron's dumbest move yet though.
analog FOUR
FOUR........
two outputs........
Dick move Elektron
Dick move.
I mean there was 4 on the Octa (but you had to do a clever workaround to get 4 outputs), so I guess they are consistent in only providing half as many outputs as generators.
But seriously.
Big
floppy
stinky cheese
Dicks.

Re: which synth ???
Doesn't Overbridge allow you to multitrack the A4? Not sure though, never used it.
