After a little hiatus, I'm back!
Re: After a little hiatus, I'm back!
House this time. Made in about an hour, so maybe not a masterpiece.

Really digging the laidback groove of MPC Track 4, but I don't really like the melody coming in at 2:36.

Interesting atmosphere here, especially with that sound wich is between en low bell and a piano sound.Barfunkel wrote:House this time. Made in about an hour, so maybe not a masterpiece.
The melody coming in the middle is great to, everything works.
With a bit more clear mix, eq on some parts it would be a very nice track.

Yeah, a nice mixer with proper EQ would be nice. It's coming in a few months hopefully, alongside some other new bits of gear.
Here's the next one! A bit of a slow ambient house thing. Or something.

Balearic house stuff. Really sorry about the super pompous name, it's (obviously) not as good as the Göttsching track.

I think there's a particular Barfunkel feel, rawness, style and groove to all your tracks. And i like it a lot! Reminds me much about the diversity of Relief Records back in the day.
Would love to hear those recorded on tape. I guess that would amplify the character, add to the rawness while rounding off the edges and glueing stuff together without investing into too much gear right now.

Yeah, I've been thinking about tape. Can't afford (or have the room, those are huge) a proper reel to reel though, but maybe a quality ordinary tape machine.
There was this really nice tape machine on sale over here a while ago (Akai GXC-570d), but I didn't have the money in my pocket and the next time it was gone. Bummer!

What about a Tascam 414?
If you multitrack record your tracks, U-he Satin VST/AU is a great alternative too!

Re: After a little hiatus, I'm back!
Really impressed with these tracks Barfunkel, have listened to a lot of your stuff, and tbh have never really "got it" - in many cases I thought it was TOO "live jam" sounding and rough.
But the tracks on this thread, taken together, showcase a guy who is really coming into his own, as someone else said, it reminds me of the diversity you got with classic 90s labels - everything different, but everything good.
Don't know whether you've released stuff before but you must be close here... look at choosing 4 or so of your best tracks, send them to Voidloss or someone for mastering (they'll advise what you needs you to do first mixdown-wise) then I'd be looking at getting them to a label - specifically, and why not aim high, a label that releases on vinyl.
Digital is fine but everything about these screams vinyl.

Not sure if my stuff is ready for release yet... They aren't that great sonically. I need to get a proper mixer, a compressor or two and some nice FX, then I could make a bit more hifi stuff.

Nah, you're not far off. I'm listening right now on some Dynaudio BM6s through a good DAC, in an acoustically treated studio here at work.
They could do with a bit more sheen, and some more stereo wideness, but that's it. The rawness is their charm.

I always thought the same thing about Barfunkels music.Reminds me much about the diversity of Relief Records back in the day.

Blow the motherfucking House down, Jack!Barfunkel wrote:Not sure if my stuff is ready for release yet... They aren't that great sonically. I need to get a proper mixer, a compressor or two and some nice FX, then I could make a bit more hifi stuff.
No nice fx here or compressors here, just tape. Smack'em!

Re: After a little hiatus, I'm back!
I'm surprised to hear that. To quote our very own Voidloss, my production "sucks ass". I tend to agree with him. I got no idea what my music sounds like on speakers actually, as I have only a pair of cheap headphones to work with at the current time.Cloaked wrote:Nah, you're not far off. Thanks to everyone for listening so far! I'll keep 'em coming!

Actually he only said that to your old stuff, he took it back on the more recent music you made.

Re: After a little hiatus, I'm back!
Ah, I missed that. Still, I'm not much of a producer. I like the process of making music, but only in my own terms and conditions. Simple hardware jams, straight to 2-track. I will get some medium to high end processing gear in the future though, but only if it suits my workflow.

Well the over all technical skill and sound of your productions (along with your productions) have improved a lot.

Re: After a little hiatus, I'm back!
Thanks! I do kinda feel that I'm working at the upper limits of my current gear. That's why I'm always talking about buying this or buying that. I want to take the next step in music and enter the realms of more professional sounding productions. However, I want to do it on my own terms, which means I'll still keep it 100% hardware and also 100% live jam based.

A new version of the previous track. Clocking at about 30 minutes! I'm aiming for a full hour on this one (when I get more ideas down). I ain't pulling none of them punches, boy!
And no, I don't expect anyone to make it past the 2 minute mark or thereabouts. It's a 100% vanity project.
