otb delay
otb delay
I am just dreaming here (or planning to save up money), but if you could have 1 delay unit, and you would have to stick with it for the rest of your life and never use another delay again, which one would you choose?
I started looking at the re-20, but then figured that el capistan is probably more versatile as a tape delay, timeline is obviously drool worthy, somehow timefactor doesnt excite me much, and the flashback although very powerful doesnt have enough knobs for my liking... then I looked at more and more and more and more and more and more *turns down feedback*
I think so far that I am going to aim to get a Strymon Timeline at some point, but might have to get something cheaper before that.
£185 - Boss RE-20 (ultimate dub)
£210 - Strymon El Capistan (good tape emulation, quite versatile)
£160 - Skreddy Echo (good tape, amazing sound especially modulated)
£140 - Subdecay Echobox or Subdecay Amnesis (nice modulated delays but not as versatile as el capistan)
£360 - Strymon Timeline (ultimate versatile sound design?)
£329 - Eventide Timefactor (dual delay line, quite a few models)
£150 - TC Electronics Flashback x4 (7 seconds of delay, good models, but not very tweakable)
£160 - Electro Harmonix Memory Man with Hazarai (quite versatile, reverse setting with decay tweak is awesome stutter)
£60 - Behringer Vintage Timemachine (actually sounds decent? mostly out of stock, very tempted by a £35 second hand one)
£100 - Jack Deville Dark Echo (modulate!)
£400?- Robot Factory Space Case (!?) and other crazy hard to find boutique pedals
£???? - Toneczar Echoczar (rumoured to be the best analog delay ever apparently - dual line as well)
£490 - Moog MF-104M (well its moog)
Am I missing any other good options? What about any cheaper options that have more than just Time, Feedback and Level controls?
Should I just move to gearslutz? I just figured out that i should probably look at and dream about rack units too?! ( Korg SDD1000 or SDD3000 used by Zion Train is the best thing I ever heard live ) Since this about delay, i dont expect any quick replies.

I was looking at an el capistan myself. Might be my next purchase actually, I`m probably going to sell my Clacktronic Wasp Drive and then I might dive in.

I could only have 1 for the rest of my life?!? RE-201. No question.
or 501,301 would be my second choice which have the sound on sound feature.
Korg StageEcho is another option.
Eventide TimeFactor would be something I would go with if I needed midi sync. I do need midi sync.

Yeah this is exactly it. I've owned the Strymon El Capistan. I didn't like the sound of the feedback. Its very bright and sharp sounding. Not like the Re201 at all which sounds really nice when in self oscillation. The thing about the Strymon is that you can change all the settings on it in a secondary mode. You can adjust the simulated tape crinkle, dirt, mechanical failure of the motor ectra. All of these factors lend itself to how a tape delay sounds. Simulating this is a pretty cool idea.then I looked at more and more and more and more and more and more *turns down feedback*

I'd like the bugbrand pt delay but I think they are impossible to find and made in limited runs.

I love my re-20. I do a lot of dubby tracks, with bits of dubstep and reggae, and its a crucial part of the sound. Its lovely on my guitar too. I don't really need a more versatile pedal as the re-20 is giving me exactly what I want.

I'm kinda tempted to build my own, or modify one.
I have an old Watkins copicat (solid state version) that I never use, I might investigate mods for it.

Re: otb delay
i got a Echo Park (http://line6.com/tonecore/echoPark.html/) a few weeks ago, i was looking for a re-20 but this one just pop up as a bargain, really cheap, so i got this one to try it out and to be honest, is quite good, versatile, i will stay with this one for a while i guess
maybe this could be an option too

Re: otb delay
I think tape delay is cool as fuck, but i feel apprehensive of getting a real one, i dont fancy repair/maintenance work and replacing tapes etc the rest of my/its life... hence I started looking at the Boss RE-20 rather than the Roland RE-201UN!T B wrote:I could only have 1 for the rest of my life?!? This is a rather confusing mini review of El Capistan, you dont think the feedback is too bright and sharp, but like the simulating idea? Or are you talking about all the settings details you can adjust in the Timeline?UN!T B wrote:Yeah this is exactly it. I've owned the Strymon El Capistan. I didn't like the sound of the feedback. That looks really cool! Local to me as well, I should keep an eye on bug brand. Kind of different from everything else.Mslwte wrote:I'd like the bugbrand pt delay but I think they are impossible to find and made in limited runs.
El Capistan definitely looks like one of the top options to meLost to the Void wrote:I was looking at an el capistan myself. Might be my next purchase actually, I`m probably going to sell my Clacktronic Wasp Drive and then I might dive in.
The thing that was (only slightly)bothering me about the re-20 is the lack of modulation, but actually if I just use it on a wet send, I can put a (stereo) modulation/chorus before it in the chain, and get that as well.innovine wrote:I love my re-20. Looks like a very clean delay, from short investigation I am not sure that I could get enough "crazy" sounds out of it, but does look like a very useful piece of kit for production, although for this sort of digital thing I'd say ITB might be more logical. It also doesn't seem very hands on, I want to tweak knobs etc!OHADOHAD wrote:yamaha d1500 or d5000 if you can find them

I definitely need to investigate more racks though, because it seems that you get a lot more versatility for your money with some of them.
I've got a Danelectro Spring King reverb, and there is a mod for that which allows you to control the fixed time mini slap back delay in there and use it as a normal delay with time and feedback controls... I've got no experience in modding things, dont really want to do it myself, but would love to get it done.Lost to the Void wrote:I'm kinda tempted to build my own, or modify one.

2 weeks ago i was all over tonecore, now i am put off. I bought a Dr Distorto on ebay, I absolutely loved the sound, but the bypass didnt work, the internal switch got physically broken (in transport?), then after i opened it up to investigate a fix it doesn't even power on anymore. I've got another tonecore, so when I feel brave and get the right allen key I will try and switch over the core with the dock of my tonecore ottofilter, because i much prefer the dr distorto sound. ANYWAY, I am not putting the Echo Park on MY list of options, because I do not trust Line 6 build quality any more.daunzila wrote:i got a Echo Park (http://line6.com/tonecore/echoPark.html/) a few weeks ago, i was looking for a re-20 but this one just pop up as a bargain, really cheap, so i got this one to try it out and to be honest, is quite good, versatile, i will stay with this one for a while i guess

Re: otb delay
That's understandable and I sort of expected as much. I did base my choice on what I think is the best sounding unit. As such I went for quality of sound. I think somebody on gearslutz said it best " Everything that comes out of it is like liquid gold..."willemb wrote:I think tape delay is cool as fuck, but i feel apprehensive of getting a real one, i dont fancy repair/maintenance work and replacing tapes etc the rest of my/its life... hence I started looking at the Boss RE-20 rather than the Roland RE-201
Its not meant to be confusing. Maybe its the way I have phrased it. I always find things I like about some kit and some things I don't like. I was giving what I think is the good and the bad on El Cap.This is a rather confusing mini review of El Capistan, you dont think the feedback is too bright and sharp, but like the simulating idea? Or are you talking about all the settings details you can adjust in the Timeline?
-negative:
I think when El Cappy is feeding back at a certain point it sounds too "bright and sharp" a digital edge to it. It sounds a bit harsh. I would always turn the feedback it down when sending it into "self oscillation".
-positive:
I like that you can adjust the settings of El Capastan. Will it sound like a well maintained unit or an old broken down piece of shit? I like this added feature set of adjusting the "broken-ness" of El Capastan.
Overall I would rate it 8/10 overall. Its not the best sounding ever but its still a pretty good pedal.
Dp-4 is a very decent multi efx. 4 I/O very flexible routing. or go for the daddy. Eventide H3000 D/SE model.I definitely need to investigate more racks though, because it seems that you get a lot more versatility for your money with some of them.

I must of literally just missed it as when I went on there a few weeks back there was no mention of a 2015 version and now it is sold out.helloitsmeagain wrote:I have the 2013 edition and went past the site to just check something on the specs. noticed he's just released the 2105 version last month. you might try again!Mslwte wrote:I'd like the bugbrand pt delay but I think they are impossible to find and made in limited runs.

Re: otb delay
If I had to take exactly one delay for the rest of my live from your list, I'd probably go either Strymon El Capistan or the Moog. Both sound lovely and have knobs for most functions, making tweaking them a breeze.

Hard to beat the RE201... if I could only have one that would be it.
I hated my RE20, personal taste I guess. The Strymon stuff looks tasty but you should look at the older i.e. cheaper bucket brigade units, Monacor, Evens, Boss, Roland, etc they can be had for €50-100ish if you get a good deal.
