I thought this was terrible.
A wasted opportunity.

Mills has been riding off the Bells his entire career.
He had the opportunity to work with an orchestra and a scoring specialist.
He could have created something wonderful, something transcendent.

Instead we have mills, embarassingly playing a fucking 909 with an orchestra embrassingly playing the fucking bells.
Probably took about half an hour to score that.

I pretend this never happened.

It`s a weird trend. Who`s next to convert their 6 minute loop into a orchestral piece?

He doesn't need to though. It's weird, I wonder if he is sick of it?
He could never play it again and I'd still go to see him, it's the way he mixes that keeps me interested.

I was lucky enough to catch him playing with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican back in October. It was AMAZING. Obviously not to everyone's taste, fair enough. But to me, it was totally special. Still using the arrangements from Blue Potential but with some new stuff as well. The orchestra were into it, and the crowd were REALLY into it. The musicians must have been struggling to hear themselves think, I doubt they have to deal with whooping crowds cheering through every song very often, but they are pros and pulled it off superbly. To be fair though, aside from the crowd, I should imagine it was an easy gig for them. But for us fans, it was a top top top night.

Caught the show at the Barbican also and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sonic Destroyer & Gamma Player came across really well as did the unexpected Ashford & Simpson cover.

First time I heard "Come Out" by mind was completely blown. I've got recordings of pretty much everything he's ever composed and put to record, some of which is among the best music I've ever heard. Very clear line from his stuff to techno, though most producers and fans are probably not aware of it.

Mills probably is aware of it, but he hasn't really put out anything of significance since the late 1990s (in my opinion, at least).

Techno owes so much to Reich.
And really, hasn't (when talking about a specific type of techno) got anywhere near Reich in this type of rythmic, hook based hypnotic minimalism.

youtu.be/Mv_8UaP_QRI

More Techno than techno, and still much better than mills getting an orchestra to play The Bells.
I love Mills, and I like that in some way he might have introduced contemporary orchestral music to techno heads who had no knowledge of it, but damn what a terrible concept. If he didn`t have his reputation and some nobody composer had tried to convert their own The Bells to orchestral score, they probably would have been sent out the room.

This is a wonderful combination of dance, visual art and Reich. Transcendent.

I love Mills' string-arrangements, but they work because it's all weirdly FM-synthesized and Mills as an untrained musician has a very unique/strange feeling for orchestral arrangement. Having it played by a real orchestra just removes the fucking point.
