Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
So, i just wanted to start a thread and see if any of you guys on here have been using Pink Noise to mix a track, i've been shown how to do this and read a few various things online. It does seem to help a lot, just thinking if theres any other fine tuning that can be done with mixing to pink noise to get all levels in correct places etc.
Peace, Sam

I got no idea what you're talking about, care to explain what you mean a bit more?

Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
I ve been mixing too to pink noise. Funny enough i thought about opening a thread about this theme yesterday but had no time. theres a good video on youtube with john demac mixing to pink noise and explaining.
Less is not always more.
Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
So yeah basically pink noise covers all the frequency band within music with and equal energy between each octave. When using pink noise you align each sound so it is barely hearable through this, allowing each sound to be sat at a pretty much perfect location within the wall of sound you've created.
Yeah i never actually watched anything on this but just watched what you said about @bladley seems interesting, but he didnt finish off what he said about the master, maybe he just dropped a utility on there? Sometimes when i do this, i align all the sounds within the pink noise, then select them all and drag them up 1db at a time so its not so low on the master channel. Right or wrong i don't .

Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
I once tried to mix to brown noise but it sounded like poo.
(Sorry - couldn't resist).

Cheers for the link to previous.
Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
Why not just use a spectrum analyser? I set my analyser slope to about -3 so pink noise would be flatish and then I know I'm trying to make a flat block instead of a slope. Then the final say is the ears...
Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
It's a good thing to use for less experienced people doing their mixdowns. Mixing the sounds into a pink noise is good to to get you in the ball park but adjustments will still be needed afterwards. It's generally just to use with volume only.

I use my ears. Mixing to pink noise might be a short cut, but in the process yu will miss a lot of worthwhile experiential lessons.
And your sound might also end up flat and lifeless.

Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
So, the concept is to use pink noise as a reference track when mixing? Why wouldn't you use a well-mixed real track as reference instead? I simply don't see the benefits.

Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
You could also get the same results by just mixing using a spectrum analyser and trying to get the flattest graph you can.
Again this would just give a flat and lifeless mix, as each tune has it`s own individual bias.
Homogenisation is not a great ideal IMO

Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
Something that maybe could deliver better results is the usage of sample magic ab program. It sits on the end ofa your master so that you can listen and compare your tracks to up to 9 tracks. just check it out maybe its something for you guys. Goes sort of in the same direction as mixing to pink noise but as others reffered before is mixing towards your fav tracks.

Hmm, very interesting. I always try to reference and then give up quickly because of the massive ball ache it becomes to bounce bits out etc. I might have to give this a go.
Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
Hmm, I was going to try this but I guess I'll just keep on trying with my own ears.
I know there isn't a short cut to a good mix but I have a hella long way to go.

I find myself using it more and more when I'm making music too, not to ripoff other peoples music but to see if my track sounds good or not, I always get stuck in loopland and refreshing the ears is nice
Re: Mixing tracks to PINK NOISE
The reason people use pink noise for a reference is because it has a flat response curve especially after 500, which is whatpeople trying to achive for mids and highs.
Something like this:

IMHO this really limits your mixing/mastering. I've seen way too many commercially mastered tracks that's got way "off" curve.

Ooooh, I'll check that out. I never reference (I know) so anything that would encourage me to would be handy.
