Final thoughts, in general, but mostly about the whole age thing...

I honestly don't know how that shit works for everybody else, I can only testify how I've been dealing with that whole thing myself.
When I got older (as in, late 20's), and got to be a dad, I noticed myself slowing down a little more.
But really, in the end, that mainly meant me going out a lot less, sure,
and me slowly replacing weed with beer. :)

For the last half year, I've started a new job that literally made me lose 11 kilo's in the first 6 weeks I started working there
(it's even more now, never ever thought the balance would ever turn out to be my friend again  ),
so yeah, got into the best physical shape I've been in for years,
but even before I started this particular job,
the internship (and almost a whole year of training) before that had me climbing in trees with a chainsaw,
yet I never lost so many kilo's this fast.

Anyways, started to let my hair grow again, got my old curls back and had to get a new pair of glasses (a certain tree killed my previous pair),
and all of a sudden, nobody even recognizes me any more when I walk past them on the street
which is quite a nice experience tbh...
But anyway, the new job means things need to move fast on the work floor,
and god knows that I've been a high energy person for pretty much 90% of my life,
so yeah, I'm back in that state of this old Cure song I always used to love...

but yeah, it's just funny as shit when people try to guess my age, and then they guess you're anywhere between 27 to 34,
while I got to be 41 just a few weeks ago.
I know I got blessed with good genes from my dad's side when it comes to the whole age thing,
but I also decided to not fucking care about the whole age thing many years ago.
Whenever you feel your body needs a longer time to recover...
I like to use that old quote I learned from Interview With The Vampire: "pay not attention, it's only your body that's dying" 8-)
;)

now Jordan, you and me need to get together for a few beers,
no fucking excuses will be accepted you cunt !! 8-) ;)

I'm 38.
That's not really old in Amsterdam is it really though. In any other city aside from a very large capital destination, being 38 in a club/ festival = fucking ancient
just don't ask him to be putting together Ikea furniture after a night out on E
(or did I remember that incorrectly, terry ?)
That's pretty much it!

The IKEA sofa arrived in the morning shortly after I got back from an ADE party at Gashouder. I gobbled half a tablet to fortify me for the job in hand, assembled the sofa (successfully I might add) and then spent the day lying on it 😄

Welcome back. By coincidence I was thinking about you earlier this week. I hope all's well 👍

Wat?

That shit belongs in a rocknroll autobiography!

That's a brilliant story. Illegal excess combined with the most mundane first world problems ever. Awesome.

Same here, I bought my mrs a wardrobe, but like, a really big one.
We'd been using this old ugly black thing we inherited with the house,
and we've been saying for 13 years now we'd eventually buy a new one.
So now I bought her a new IKEA one, 3m wide, 2.36m high.
Last weekend all I did was assemble the dumb thing,
and then I remembered your story...

I was busy sucking big name DJ cocks to get me a superb record deal, of course, as usual... 8-)

I don't know how to answer that one man.
Long and complicated (as most things are, I guess).

Summer 2018 I did some internships with gardeners.
Decided afterwards I wanted to take an official training, but my options from where I lived were like 1 to 1,5 hours driving single way,
which was not something I would survive for a long time.
But there was also an option exactly in my old hometown where my parents still live...
So basically, from september 2018 onwards I went back there for a whole school year during the week, which was a really really weird experience to say the least.

Got back in touch with the 1 or 2 guys that are still there from when I was young, which turned out to be a lot more fun than I expected.
Also discovered there was a LOT more of my growing up area inside me than I ever cared to realize/acknowledge (sense of humor, general "vision on life" or whatever you wanna call it,...)
When I was 17, I couldn't get out of that place soon enough, really hated the town and whole area.
So yeah, finding out 23 years later that there's a hell of a lot more of that area in your system than you ever thought,
even feeling you'd have a lot easier time understanding people because their whole mentality and way of life is so much closer to yours,
it's fucking weird...
My mrs even suggested she would not mind moving there if that would make me happier. :)
I was like "hell no, I've invested too much time and work into this house here, and I feel perfectly fine here"
it would also break my youngest heart if we ever moved, she really loves this house and I don't see her adjusting to a whole new area with new friends speaking a dialect she'd barely understand (even though her whole family speaks it).

During the training, I quite enjoyed anything to do with trees.
Really fell in love with that part.
So was pretty set on doing an extra training to become a tree surgeon.
But yeah, that's another 5000€, and OR a whole year like 2 days a week,
OR 3 months a very intense training that would have only started october 2019.
After my basic training ended, I had the luck to get an internship at one of the biggest tree surgeons here in Belgium.
1 month, but I quit after like 2 weeks or so. Really didn't like it there.
The job (at this particular place) turned out to be one big tree cutting industry.
Partly because there's a parasite, the Ips typographus, that's killing all the firs,
so on some days you'd be taking down 20 of those trees with a team of maybe 3 guys,
chopping them all up in wood shredders.
But also because the guy'd grown so big he had a team to run and expensive machines to pay.

I'd seen it before with the garden construction guys.
They all wanna earn really good money, so they gotta buy BIG machines.
Which means situations like: machine A or B breaks down? 10k repair to cough up.
So they all stress out like crazy and rush from one job to another.
Zero soul in the job any more, zero time for enjoying nature.
Really, really got disgusted about that part.
I understand it, but it's, in the end, their choice to be doing it that way.

Around the same time, I spent 1 day with one of my oldest friends, who (what are the odds, huh?) took the tree surgeon training a few years earlier,
and was now doing that as a small side income for his main gardener job.
It was the perfect day possible. We just slowly trimmed a really old oak tree that was standing at the back of a small garden in a residential area.
He works by himself, so he has invested the minimum in materials, and yet, we handled the job just fine. We just took our time.
With the tree worker I did my internship at, the same job would have been done in 2 hours or so.
My friend took a whole day for it.

Anyway, after I ended my internship at the one shitty place,
I decided I didn't wanna do the tree surgeon thing any more.
Not saying I'll never do it, just not for now.
Maybe some day in the future I'll still do the training, but yeah,
I don't have an extra 5k that I can afford to spend if I'd only be wanting to do it on a part-time sort of basis (which is what I realized during the training year and internship).
I had been living on a really minimum income for more than a year, and we'd slowly been building up bills to pay as a family.
So I just needed to start earning money again.

So I went for plan B, which was being a mail man...
No idea how the job is in other countries, but I seriously underestimated the job over here.
I really really like it (though there are obvious disadvantages as well, but you have those in every job),
and it gives me every afternoon free. (got a free day now, otherwise I wouldn't be here writing this now)
I've lost 11 kilo's in like the first 6 weeks of my job (never even had that with the whole gardener/tree surgeon training and god knows that was physically even harder than what I do now), and I'm still losing a little weight now, 4 months later. 8-)
(I swear if I knew I could still lose weight that easily at my current age, I would have lived even more rock 'n roll FFS   )
Should have done this years before.
When you do the job right, they leave you alone most of the time.
It gives you lots of energy (LOTS of energy), and you're outside and still not completely physically wasted by the end of the day.
Yeah sure, december is pure hell over here (just discovered that, only started this summer), but normally (not this month), I'm home by 1PM.
Obviously, I do start at 4AM (I get up at 2:40, live half an hour away from where I work, didn't wanna work over here, but in the city I used to live in for 10 years before I moved here), so I do go to bed early, but yeah, every afternoon free.
When you can do without afternoon naps, or even with a nap once in a while, that's a LOT of free time,
and yeah, I had some serious catching up time to do with my family.
I mean, I had to leave them behind every sunday evening.
My youngest, only 8 at the time, was always crying, even worrying that daddy would eventually prefer to go and live with grandma and grandpa again...
(   hell NOOOOOOO !!!)
It wan't as if I had a fight with my mrs or something, it was just the situation we had to deal with if I wanted to do the training.
And I looked around for decent gardening jobs here for a month or two, but couldn't find anything decent,
and honestly, looking back now, I'm glad I went for plan B.

But yeah, mentally, you can say that was quite the year...

There was the whole living with your parents thing again.
Imagine being 40, and having to be perfectly accustomed to being yourself, in your own house, with your own studio, eating your own cooked food (my mom was never a good cook, nor did she ever liked to cook), drinking beer whenever you wanted to.
Then you're living back inside the house you spent your youth in,
not cause you fucked some young pretty thing for a while and your mrs found out and kicked you out of your house at about the same moment the pretty thing found someone else on tinder or whatever sites people use nowadays (sorry, too old to know  )
nope, none of that, just for a training, and purely for practical reasons in the room of your favorite (deceased) sister,
having to eat the mediocre food your mom cooks.
I tried cooking the first 2 months or so, it mainly upset my mom because I was using all these "exotic" ingredients, making food that was for some reasons hard for them to "digest", or hell, just manage to eat with their teeth.
Honestly, if both my parents were really old, and I don't mean age but health wise, I would have understood,
but the thing is, they always loved my cooking when they were here, or even when I was paying visits in the years my sister had just died I and went there to cook for her husband and kids. But somehow, now it was giving her stress.
So I eventually just quit cooking and ate her food.
Even looked for every possible little thing that made their lives easier.
Always left my footprint in their house as small as possible.
Left all my stuff in my room (not very much, mind you, cause I arranged to have certain things at both my house and their place for practical reasons, so lived out of a backpack for a whole year), left them both tv's, tried not to sigh with the food I saw every evening,... :)

Then there was the mom vs dad thing. Big one for me to digest.
My mother's 11 years younger than my father, and hyper-active (I'm at least 80% my mom, for better or worse),
my father is a lazy (but really chilled) guy who became even more lazy after his retirement.
My mom has been ready to kill him for years, though he seldomly seems to care/notice.
But yeah, in every day life, it means you see your mom criticizing your dad EVERY fucking time, EVERY fucking day.
It's like a constant war zone, except 90% of the time only from one side.
Like one country constantly attacking another country, and the other country only doing the bare minimum to say "hey, come on now, ok, I'll throw you a missile cause I'm supposed to do this in this game, right?"

I tried so hard to try and get them to get along a little better,
I know I had their spirits up for a few months, and my mom was certainly giving my dad more of a break.
But after I left, it really didn't take very long for my mom to fall back into her old habits and taking my dad down again every fucking day. :|

Other than that, I got into contact with my trainer (the one from my basic gardener training for a year) on FB only a few weeks after the training had finished. He was in a very bad shape, in some hospital which he didn't wanna say the name of, with a complete depression cause his 2nd wife wanted to divorce him. He said from day 1 he was gonna kill himself.
I spent a whole week every evening trying to convince himself that was a bad idea. Talked for hours every night. (this was just before I started my new job, about half a year ago). Told him he would leave 4 kids behind, how much that would tear them apart. How he was more than just him+his partner.
How all his pupils would miss him,...
In the end I heard nothing from him any more, and I knew he was gonna leave the hospital.
Next day I got an email in, written to a group of like 50 people, with like a very detailed biography of his life,
and exact details about what kind of funeral he wanted, and links to all the music he wanted to be played there (pointing me and some other guy out to do the job).
So yeah, dead silence, eventually decided to mail some other people from a group I didn't know anyone from,
only to hear he really did kill himself only hours after he left the hospital.
Funeral was held in extremely small circle.

I found out later that there were about 3 or 4 people into serious contact with him that last week,
and that at the time I got into contact with him, he had already survived one attempt.

Some people tell me "man, when they really want to do this, you can't do much about it",
and yeah, I guess in a way that's true, but you still wanna fucking try all you can, no? :|
And other (usually more selfish) pricks on this planet, tell me "fuck people that commit suicide, they're a bunch of cowards".
Or people tell you "ah, just move on." And I did and still do.
It's life, for better or worse.
And yeah, it was not some personal friend, but on the other hand, a teacher I had a great connection with for a whole year,
so many great great laughs, so many situations of discussing life, relationships, dealing with the frustrations of government supported trainings,...

And as I like to explain this to people: imagine seeing some total stranger on a bridge, ready to jump.
Wouldn't you do everything in your power to try and stop him?
Well, for me it wasn't some total stranger, and I thought I tried my best,
but in the end he decided to go anyway and now there's just a widow that's totally fucked up by guilt,
and 4 kids (youngest being the age of my youngest) who are left behind with all this sadness,
no doubt some day thinking "hell, even us kids weren't enough reasons for our dad to stay alive for".
Ugh, that thought fucks up me up every time.

ok Mono, I think that about wraps up my last 1,5 year or so.
But apart from the impression you might get from this above post, I am doing great.
Finally getting back into some music making again,
and fucking honestly loving to have some more time with my family again.
Somehow in the year I was mostly gone, my oldest transformed into a teenager...
A beautiful teenager, I gotta say, so I'm keeping my shotgun ready...

but now that I'm finished cooking for a few days (noodle soup based on home made bouillon extracted from cooking pig feet for an hour or two),
had a brief afternoon nap, brought the pig feet to the dogs of 2 of my neighbors, sat on the couch of one of my neighbors (the old lady with cancer) for another long chat (even before the cancer the chats were always long, trust me, and it's not me that does the talking there, believe it or not :) )
Anyway...

how you guys been ?
you ok, Mono ?
Better enjoy the being a dad part man, cause they grow up fast as fuck, I can tell you that!

Mr Amobe, you got into parenthood yet?
If not, how come? Pretty sure you got a proper mrs if I remember correctly, and trust good old hades when he tells you having kids catapults you into a completely different, but magnificent universe all together. It's one of the best things you can do in this life. ;)

over9000, I could be wrong, but I think I sent you a PM on SC months ago.
Weren't you the guy that is originally from Sils Maria, where I spent many happy summer days as a kid staying in Livigno ?
One day I wanna go back there with my kids and try throwing flat rocks onto the water surface to make them jump up again.
(honestly no idea how you call that in English, and hell, not even sure how you call that in Dutch, so how the fuck would I be able to google that shit :) )
I remember the rocks around that lake being of a kind that you were able to break off your own little flat parts, so you had the perfect stones to try and start skipping/throwing them over the water. Fucking loved that shit as a kid (still do). 8-)

ah well, keeping my posts short is obviously not for me, I think we all know that by now. :)
but no need for an upgrade, I don't intend to spend as much time here as I used to. 8-)

my oldest daughters best friend is from Romania,
and she goes back there pretty much every school holiday.
She told me how her friend over there was going out with a friend there,
and she was told by her parents to "always stay together with your friend".
They ended up somewhere with booze and slightly elderly boys,
and I swear, what they were saying to them sounded as if I was watching the start of some porn video... :?
"nice t-shirt you got there! I'm sure you look even better when you take it off",
that kind of cheesy shit...

I don't expect my own daughter to be in a situation like that pretty soon (or better: never),
but I still don't know what to think about that.
I already gently tried to explain to my oldest that for many young people, I do believe the idea of sex is at times disturbingly influenced by watching too much porn. It's mostly young guys, obviously, but even young girls now think they "ought" to do A or B because it's being done all the time in porn.
Larry Clark made a short documentary called "Impaled", part of the film "Destricted", where he shows how much it can fuck young people up.
Highly recommended and extremely funny to watch.

Anyway, I've said for years that I want my girls to practice a self defense sport for years,
so I'm slowly looking into that now...
Already explained to my oldest: "when you are really in danger, just go for his balls baby, but kick/knee him REAL hard. That will always do the trick" 8-)
