200 quid budget for headphones...what to choose

I know I'm being a cunt for asking this as there's loads of headphone discussion on here but I just find the mish-mash of opinion confusing in my current delicate state of mind so I'm trying to get a simple answer to a simple question....I have 200 quid to spend on new headphones (been using MP3 headphones)

my needs are

Budget...200 quid (ish)
type...in ear or over ear.
good for extended sessions
good for subs/bass as I have a real problem there.
good transient response as I like percussive stuff.

also they don't have to be super accurate as if I ever make anything worth mixing I shall let someone else with skill do that. Ideally something loud but not fatiguing.

I have a pair of Sony MDR-7509 that I can wear forever, unless my head starts to get too hot - very comfortable, but I don't think they make them anymore. However the Sony MDR7506 are very similar and I've read other people's reports of them being very comfortable too, and they are still available.

Hmm, Beyerdynamic DT770 are a bit bassy and pretty good, I uses them for years. Not the best headphones out there, even in the price range, but they match the criteria.

Get with the program and get the official Subsekt headphones (AKG 701/702s) like the rest of us No but seriously, if you go back and search, there are a bunch of big headphones threads. Steve always recommended them so a lot of us went and got them and they really are unbeatable for the price. They also fit all your criteria, they are quite comfy, they are super accurate in the subs and they have a great transient response.

Headphone thread. The summary is AKG 701/702. They are the same headphone, the 702 has a detachable cable. That's the only difference.

I bought the AKG 702 - really like them. The only issue is they make everything sound too good. But my mixes translate and as I've learnt the headphone better I've got much better at mixing.

I eventually also picked up an amp for them - got the Voidloss Recommend Pro-Ject Headbox S. I noticed a slight improvement in sub bass reproduction but too be fair my ears aren't trained enough to pick up anything else. Not to say it didn't improve the sound over my 2i4 headphone output, just that it wasn't like a night a day moment for me.

But yeh, great headphone.

If you want bass/sub, beyerdynamic dt770 imho will do the job, it's kind of a basic for electronic music in general.
I'm using since a couple of days the Shure SRH940, and it has very flat response, and the sound seems really detailed. But not really bassy.

matching ur criteria, u can not go wrong with the DT 770

A good thing about the growing AKG cult on here is that it means more and more of us are getting a monitoring format that we all have in common (that eliminates room differences). So it makes talking about each others/helping/advising a more easily translated process as it puts everyone on the same sonic grounding.

On a serious note since I've listened to some of my sketches on AKG's I've noticed a lot of side in the low end...quick question should the side be cut (I've got bx control) and just leave the mono so it doesn't muddy or just mono everything under say 100 and leave the rest in there?

That question only really has a contextual answer.
It depends on the tune.

A safe bet is mono from 80-100 down, it shouldn't change the sound too much. If it does you can give a little bump to the Mid signal at 140-200 and it will compensate for any perceived drop in heft (a fairly common mastering "trick").

Sometimes Mid-side EQ is a better solution. You can curve the side signal down from whatever to whatever. Say a 24db curve from 250 down to 0db at 60hz in the sides, or whatever sounds best.
