Netflix tips
Re: Netflix tips
It is, just got through. The season's self-contained, starting off from events after the trial in Daredevil. The camerawork is at times very similar to Mr. Robot, static frames with off-balance talking heads from odd angles. The violence is very graphic, but there's surprising tenderness for balance. The plot's naïve but enjoyable. Recommended.Lost to the Void wrote:Bernthal works well. I hope the series is good.

Re: Netflix tips
I enjoyed The Expanse. First two episodes are rough, but then it picks up. Among the better space opera on TV.
Re: Netflix tips
Maybe I missed it, but:
- Dark (German show)
- La Casa de papel (Spanish)
Rest has been covered I think.
Both very entertaining to watch!

I haven't watched La Casa De Papel yet, but plan to do so,Patriek wrote:Maybe I missed it, but:

however, "Dark"...
If all goes well (=if we don't both fall asleep 10 minutes after we put the kids to bed),
we should watch the 2nd part of the last episode this evening (yeah, when you can watch the final episode of a series in 2 sessions, it says a lot about fatigue or about the series or both )
Anyway, I've been meaning to write about Dark ever since we did decide to continue watching it.
I have extremely mixed feelings about Dark, but most certainly only 30% or so are positive.
Dark could have been really great.
Some things I couldn't help noticing :
*I think the scenario is pretty damn good for the most part,
but it was SOOOOOOOOOOOO badly told. Good idea, but so badly executed.
I mean, time traveling stuff always gets extremely complex very soon, so I can understand it's difficult. But fuck me... To give you an example : at one point they end an episode with showing pics from each character in 1953, 1986 and 2019, just so the viewer can get it. Really... couldn't they have done it some other way ? Like giving each of them some typical "tic" or some form of behavior that makes it very easy for the viewer to recognize them ? Or, as is the case with 1 main character, a huge scar on his face ? There are so many options to do this. They didn't use any of them, and then "helped" the viewer in 1 episode, and then went total berserk again, leaving you all the time thinking "who the fuck was that again ??"
*Why do they seem to think the main way to show people it's 1986 again is to show them a Raider instead of a Twix ? (I know they used other stuff as well, but after like the 4th or 5th time of that Raider joke, you can't help but wonder if a Raider/Twix was the only snack they knew/know in Germany)
*Why did ALL the women had to look like they are all a bunch of totally depressed horribly "out-lived" cunts ?? I mean, there was literally 1 single person of the female species that looked pretty (hell, even ok would have been nice, and I'm not even talking about just looks, I'm talking about radiating (pun intended, yes sir !) any form of positive energy), so yeah, what a surprise when that turns out to be the one who does the "show tits for no reason" thing...
Admittedly most men looked like they could do with a lot of Xanax or some great E just as well, but they did come across, in general, as being a lot better off than the women...
Ow wait, I remembered a 2nd female character that didn't look like they would kill themselves any moment, but that's still quite a depressingly low number.
*the color filters, just fucking everywhere, all the time.
*the SOUNDTRACK !!!! My god, there was a "ZWWWWWEEEEEEEOOOONNNGGGGGG" sound going on like every fucking 5 seconds. I mean, my mrs and I don't even refer to the series as "Dark", we just say "hey, are we gonna watch another zwwweeeeeeoooooonnnnggggg" tonight ? I have literally never heard a soundtrack that was so much "in your face". For me, it ruins pretty much all the fun of watching Dark.
It could be different for non musicians, it probably is, but that shit was just too much. I'd almost think it's better to be the great grand child of Trump than to be in any way related to the composer of that soundtrack.
*Perhaps a small thing, but raised by my mrs : when the story is already complicated. Why do they put in certain characters that are totally unnecessary in any way ? There's quite a few small side paths of the scenario that just don't add any extra content to the story at all.
*Perhaps another small detail, but there is not a single person in Dark that lives in an apartment. Anyone who's ever been in Germany long enough knows that is extremely unlikely.
All in all, this show could have been so great, but I found watching it massively frustrating.
I was happy with every positive thing I saw :
some of the plot twists about X finding out he's just been having a thing with his aunt, and many other situations like that. Some of the decors which were really really great. The acting which was all VERY well, tbh,...
But I would have never continued to watch it if it wasn't for my mrs and because the show was German.

Re: Netflix tips
I highly recommend "Dirty Money".
I'm about halfway through,
and I admit it starts with the most boring one (about the VW SW scam on their diesel vehicles),
but just the 3rd episode alone about the pharmaceutical business...
Just now starting the 4th one, HSBC laundering money from drug cartels...
ow boy, the whole documentary series is just pure entertainment about the scum of the earth,
and so well made : perfectly cut, interviewing as many people as possible to show all sides of the story,
really really well done for a documentary, and extremely well researched.

Re: Netflix tips
Has anyone seen the film 'Oldboy' the original korean one?
That's not one to watch with the missus on a Friday night and to expect some action later on.
I know....

man, pretty much 90% of the Korean or Japanese (and some of the Chinese) films like that...jordanneke wrote:Has anyone seen the film 'Oldboy' the original korean one?

Really, they can get very very brutal.
I remember this one scene from an old Kim Ki-Duk film where a girl swallows a fishing line with razor blades attached to it, and then starts to slowly pull it back out of her throat again...
Worst part was it wasn't even necessary for the story, tbh.
I guess it was just some Korean way to tell the viewers the girl was in serious mental pain or something...

I mean, all it does is show you more facts about shit you already knew anyway.
Of course it's depressing, but I think evading the truth is far worse.

One of my fave films. Beautifully shot. Dark as fuck. The remake was pathetic.
Yeah, not really a film for sexy times.

Re: Netflix tips
Sinner was fantastic.
All the Nordic Noir stuff is worth watching.
The Bridge
Lava Field
Nobel
Not noir, but Rita is also great.
Also,
Devilman Crybaby.... Gets fucked up real quick.
The Good Place:. Is a lot of fun. Ted Damson is hilarious in it.
The Collector: Dark saw-esque horror.

Re: Netflix tips
Watching Altered Carbon. It's good, not great. (Which is exactly how I felt about the book.) But entertaining enough and the central critique of wealth and privilege hoarding by a tiny slice of ultra-rich seems...timely. Also timeless.
Re: Netflix tips
just started to watch "Rotten" yesterday, the documentary series about food.
looks to be even better than Dirty Money.

Re: Netflix tips
Has anyone seen that show about toys of the 80s?
It's not award winning, but it's interesting to see how he man and Gi Joe were engineered to bleed parents dry.

Re: Netflix tips
Rode Ridder and He-man both look like they'd enjoy each other's company.
In-fact in Berghain, I saw a man wearing a leather he-man vest. I admired the workmanship but questioned the practical use.
