UAD Oto Biscuit emulation for 125 € - is it worth it?

Post by Andre_Crom »

Hi guys,

in UAD's current sale this plug can be had for 149 €, and they give a further 25 € discount voucher.

I demo'ed it a while ago and really liked it but have no longterm experience.

Does anybody have it since a while? Do you feel it's really worth the 125 € for somebody who already has a few more common bitreduction plugins, like decimort and so on?

I'm quite a back to basics guy these days with plugins since a while, evading expensive specialised stuff and often just using Ableton's stock plugins, but consider to make an exception here...

Hey !

For the plugin, actually I don't have it but I've the real Oto Biscuit and I see that the plug share the same engine.

The sound is perfect, inverted bit is super cool and I personally use it on every project I do.

I think it's a real great investment, the possibilities are insane and the sound design behind this kind of gear are amazing.

I have mine setup in return, I love it everytime I send drums, vox or synth into it, really a great machine.

I had a Biscuit for about 5 years now, or at least almost pretty much since the moment they were being produced.
I also have stuff like Decimort.
I think the Biscuit is a totally different kind of bit crusher.
Decimort is usually more about ringing overtones, kind of,
while the Biscuit can get totally brutal.

Now, I have no idea what the plugin is like, but IF it really is a copy from the Biscuit, it would also mean it has the extra FX and the analog filter at the end. And that filter is, in my opinion, extremely important,
since it's one of the nicest analog filters I heard, and since it's the perfect way to inject a little warmth (yeah, cliché word) back into the sound. A lot of bit crusher sounds sound very digital immediately, the OTO people found the perfect anti-dote for that by adding that filter.
Another excellent feature is 2 knobs for dry/wet, instead of just a simple dry/wet knob. Makes a hell of a difference.
Perhaps the only downside I would see is that with the 8 pads, the effect can easily get too much.
The filter helps a bit with that, but I always find myself using 1 or 2 pads max.
I find the wave shaper FX pretty good as well.

I have nothing but great words for OTO. They make high quality HW, and semi-unique products.
Some of the best built quality I ever saw, and great customer support.
I used to own a BIM as well, but I didn't use it enough so I sold it in the end.

In my opinion, you won't get anywhere close with Decimort or the Live stock plugins. No way.

Oh yeah, and the original Biscuit later came with a firmware update that made it possible to use it as a mono digital synth as well. Free update. How nice is that ? :)
