Damn, wish my work bonus would hurry up.

$300 dollars off in Aus at the moment.
That looked to be a great deal! Did you get it?
Nope. My lovely, better half decided to smash one of the credit cards for a couple of months and I wasn't on to it. Pretty much all of my bonus went straight on that card. Will have to wait for next time.

Around the same time, there was an elektron A4 for about $700 off (was brand new too), just when the new ones were being announced. Missed that one too!

I guess that's the life I chose for myself. 3 kids, one income, big mortgage. A few fairly large life decisions taken a little too lightly at the time. Slowly digging my way out now, but still have a way to go. Just gotta keep plugging away with the laptop and might take Hades' advice and spend a couple of months building new operator patches from scratch as an alternative to playing with some nice hardware. Have also signed up for the public beta of Ableton Live 10, so hopefully might spend some time on that to distract myself from missing out on a couple of pretty good deals.

Only issue I have is I wish it outputted stereo rather than mono. I also don't love the filter. I don't hate it either, I just don't love it. And for me, given the Roland fetish, I would have preferred chorus over delay as the onboard effect. That said, the delay can be pretty wild.

Exactly my thoughts!
Overall, love it, its capableof makimg great warm sounds.

Dont like how resonance is killing lows did you find any way around it?

can't you get your wife to do some webcam porn or something ?
kind of like Jennifer Jason Leigh in "Short Cuts" ?
;)

be careful taking advice from that Hades cunt !
but in all fairness, when I was making those patches, I was still surrounded by enough HW synths,
I just wanted to limit myself to Analog and the Live stock FX at the time.

I would say, I'd happily send you some of those patches if that might help, but they are for Analog mostly, not for Operator (though of course I have some of those as well saved over the years).
I included some of my Analog patches in that Live pack I made for subsekt about a year ago.

Yeah that's exactly the issue I have with the filter.

Good idea about the webcam, I'll run it past her tonight. Should get a fairly positive response I reckon

And yeah, sorry I thought you said operator before, but I should also have a crack at working from scratch in analog too. Maybe once I've had a go for a few weeks, then I'll have a look at your patches to see what I can learn from you.

well, the main difference is that Operator is mainly an FM synth (while Analog is a classic subtractive synth),
though you can use Operator as a subtractive synth as well if you use all 4 oscillators next to each other instead of taking one of the FM settings where 1 or more Operators are modulating each other.
But Operator only has 1 filter, while Analog has 2 (which you can run parallel and serial)
On the other hand, Operator does let you touch the fundamental and harmonics,
which can be very handy.
Do check out that, a lot of people never even bother about fundamentals and harmonics while it is essential to understanding how sound works (and really easy too). Just read up on the theory, go to that page in Operator, and select a few of the waveforms and look at the harmonics, and hear the difference.
Then experiment some with adding or removing harmonics.

mayb a stupid question but cant find the answer
when connected with the usb cable does it need the power supply aswell
or is the usb cable a power supply aswell

other question i read on some sites i need a audio interface
this will be my first piece of hardware and i want to use it like this
- record the audio including automation
- draw in the note in ableton and record the midi automation
- record the midi / note and the automation

Yes, you still need power supply. Usb cable transmits midi.

well, how do you want to record the synth ?
if you only plan to record the MIDI and send MIDI back to it,
you don't need an audio interface.
But honestly, I think you'll be wanting to record the audio out from the HW synth at some point into your computer, so yeah, at that point you need an audio interface.
I got quite a few HW synths here, and I honestly couldn't imagine myself using only MIDI clips for them in Live.
You start with MIDI clips, but usually you just start recording their audio once you're pretty much satisfied with the result.

Agree with Hades.
I use both options but mostly recording audio.
Also, when recording audio there is no midi latency which can be hassle sometimes

I've tested the monologue and loved it instantly.
I'll never say I'm some kind of expert, but hey,
I bought my 1st synth in '94 and have been through about 33+ HW synths during the years,
so if anything, it's hard for me to be still impressed by some piece of gear.

Now that I sold some gear, I'm seriously thinking about getting a Minilogue myself.
However, I've heard the Monologue sounds quite different than the Minilogue.
(ask Steve (Voidloss) for more details)

the extremely easy interface,
the lovely sound (and I'm critical and hard to please when it comes to that,
I've been through too many HW synths to still be impressed easily),
and the shop I tried it at only had it connected to a very cheap pair of monitors,
which certainly didn't help to make it sound good.

I had a good laugh when the guy who owned the shop came up to me,
and specifically asked me to not program any patches.
I said "hey, of course I'm gonna program patches, WTF do you mean ? What else is a synth for ?"
And then he said he meant I'm not allowed to overwrite any patches.
Apparently previous customers had overwritten the factory patches with some really horrible sounds a few times,
which forced them to do a factory reset every time this happened... :D

Only thing I couldn't properly grasp in the hour or so that I tested it,
was the scaled down envelope knobs system.
I'm sure once I read the manual and see their point, it's pretty easy, or at least so I've been told by others,
but at the time, I just couldn't get my head around it.

nonetheless, great synth, very versatile, and lovely interface.
highly recommended.

Yeah I think people thought the monologue was just a mono-minilogue, I did.
It`s not so, the mono has a slightly different oscillators, a different filter, and a lot of different features to the mini.
I have both the mini and the mono now.

Mono is "better" for bass sounds (apart from bass chords of course). Filter is more conducive to low end.
The mono sound is flabbier (in a good way) and looser than the minilogue. It`s sound is quite vintage, but it has very modern features (LFO is nutso, goes waaaaaay up in to the audio rate), whereas the minilogue is a true modern sounding analogue (that you can get vintage sounds from).

The envelopes are really clever, much better implementation of minimised envelopes than say.... the Arturia Microbrute.

This will make it very clear how clever the envelope implementation is.

You can make some nice analogue percussion (if that`s your bag).

I`m using it mostly for thick, nasty, atonal organic bass and sub sounds and really weird alien shit (thanks to the LFO).

ok, so just one EG for everything ??
Didn't even realized that when I tested this thing.
That sucks, big time ! :|
We're 2017, make it 30 or 50 or 80 or 100€ more expensive for all I care,
so you can incorporate an EG for all 3,
but just 1 envelope for amp/pitch/filter ???
No way, that just sucks.
I can kind of understand why they cut the EG down to attack and decay,
especially since it's a mono synth,
but that doesn't mean I fucking like it!

nonetheless, thx for posting these video's.
It's funny, I used to know automatic gainsy from the days when I was still a very active poster at the vintage synth forum. Hadn't seen that username for years... :)

Mark Doty (automatic gainsay) is hugely respected in production circles.

It was his video that explained the envelopes that led to me giving the monologue a second try as I had my doubts.
Super clever implementation of minimal envelope setup, compare with the shit of the microbrute, for example....
I rarely pine for a second envelope when using this, as it is really 2 envelopes controlled from one set of controls. I mean it works, the video explains it very well, keeping cost and size down I can't think of a better way of doing it and there are also some clever routings that help with different ways of working the envelope.
It really doesn't suck at all.

Its immediate. Real easy to get around/play with. Knob per function for the most part.

Sorry to go off track on the mono/minilogue discussion. But I just went back to check on the price of the minilogue ($700 aus) and saw they have a special on BassStation 2 for $429 aus. I know they are completely different beasts, but I know the BS2 got some good reviews back in the day, and under $500 is almost in reach for me at the moment. Anyone got a BS2 - what are your thoughts?

Well, when I was looking for a mono this was something I tested.
The sound is great, build is a bit plastic, but solid.
I found myself frustrated by the nob per function-ality of it.
Both the Oscillator controls and the filter are switch mode-ed, so you have to flick a switch between the settings, and the knobs have no parameter display, although they do "pick up", so you have to remember what the settings were or risk fudging them.
Ultimately it`s that, and the lack of some of the more creative features of the Korg Mono, that led me to get the Korg Mono over the Novation.
Sound wise though, I doubt you would be disappointed.
