A bit of a comeback track...

Post by Barfunkel »

Due to some (rather serious) health issues I've basically had nothing to do with music the last 8 or so months, haven't even listened to what has come out lately, neither have I went clubbing. The last track I finished was in June (which came out on a small digilabel), then I basically just made like 3 loops in 4 months.

Anyways, I'm a bit better now and have the energy to make music again so I made this during this week:

Could maybe use some more EQ here and there, but I've listened to it for too long now, difficult to remain objective anymore.

Made with Reaper and pretty much only freeware plugins, only Satson is a commercial plugin.

Maybe a bit cheesy but I'm a cheesy kind of fellow. Dunno how it sounds on studio speakers, I only have headphones for now.

Glad to hear you are better.

I like the track, and is impressive that it's all made for free.

For me, the arrangement is too long. By the second break at 6 mins I was tuning out.

I'm not great at mixing, but I can hear that the top lacks a bit of bite, it's just a little flat, almost like there is a slight shelf on the master. Maybe try a bit overdrive on selected tracks, so they cut through more.

Edit, I really like the track, it's building and groovy.

Good to have you back around.

Again, can't really comment on the mix, but the kick was poking through my earbuds maybe a little too much for my liking, but it could be fine with proper monitoring. I liked the tune, but its probably stretched out a minute or 2 too far like Jordan says. Good to hear some little variations and fx in there, it's been a weak point for me in a lot of your stuff, but this was much better.

You're right about the length. I kinda had some kinda idea for the last 2 minutes, but it's basically just looping the same thing for the last 1,5 minutes.

This is great, my only advice would be to listen to it on a few systems. The kick is too loud in the mix and domineering on my set up, standard KRK 6’s. The lead is good and I really like the automation changes but the pads are just buried. Which is a shame because they are quite emotive and will carry a lot the emotion of the track. Hope this helps.

Yeh, thanks!

I was thinking about re-visiting this one more time, after I distance myself a bit from it. Make it a minute shorter, see if there are some production issues etc.
