dubdub - ambient 710

Post by dubdub »

I posted this in the WIP thread a while ago and I finished it a few days ago. No drastic changes, just a bit of automation and arrangement. Not much happening really, just a chilled out ambient drifter! Bass could maybe be a bit louder but I'm not really sure.

Nicely done. But i do feel like sometimes the hiss/noise is a bit distracting and can sound a bit like a 'forced texture' thing in the track.

Not saying just for your production specifically but i feel like with ambient stuff, its nice to really listen to all the synth textures and other ambient background effects without having a sea of hiss blaring in your ears.
Dont take life so seriously

Nice developing drones and other elements. The bass sounds fine to me. The elements play well with each other and despite that there is not much happening it stays interesting and I feel hypnotized listening to it.

Something that's immediately bugging me a bit is the high end that starts at full blast right from the start, I feel this track would really benefit from introducing it more gradually, or only letting it come through intermittently even. Some of the stabs and bell like tones seem to lack a bit of depth to them, maybe a bit too heavy on the eq or something, combined with narrow width? I also think more movement in the stereo field is needed when you want to make this type of thing a bit more engaging, though that also depend on whether you want it to be background music or a more engaging type deal.

Overall I like the atmosphere and little noises sprinkled on top, though without much in the way of key/timbre changes it's a bit stretched out for what you have.

seems like that white noise sound is masking the clearity of the other sounds, I think it should be more to the background... further than that it's a fine piece of ambient music, but nothing that stands out. would be nice if there was something in there to catch my attention...

Well I for one do not mind the hiss - I thought it was a field recording of waves, actually...

I like it :) it reminds me of Wolfgang Voigts GAS project, and one thing (which I guess is essential to ambient) is that there every now and then (somewhere around the 1:45 mark for instance) is something tonal, which sparks my imagination and then I begin to produce possible melodies in my head <3 being home alone and contemplating going to bed did not hurt it either ;)

The noise is a "field recording" of a rainy street, captured from the window of my bathroom

There you go :D It sounded "too good" for artificial hiss ;)

still listening to this. has the key for ambient tunes, reveals more details on each listen. great work...

It's very good, apart from the hiss, for me, the track really comes alive when the hiss is much lower in volume.

I guess the hiss maybe a personal thing, but it's just distracting for me. Taking up the mix when the music is by FAR more interesting to listen to.

Thanks! It's funny, when I listen to other people's music the detail work always feels so effortless but when I make a track like this myself, the detail stuff takes way more time than the main elements of the track and feels very stupid and laborious. But I guess perhaos that feeling of effortlessness in other people's tracks is just an illusion and it takes a lot of time for everyone to make a detail-intensive track?

Thanks! Like I said earlier, the hiss is a field recording, so the dynamics are "real", I thought it was interesting to build the track around that, the fact that it's really enveloping the mix in certain parts and then pulls back in other parts. But you are right, it probably could have been a bit quieter in certain parts.

I tried the mix without the hiss at a certain point and really didn't like it, felt like there is a lot of depth missing and very dull, the hiss sort of fills out the highend where everything else is quite rolled off to make it sound warm. There are also some very nice details in the field recording, birds chirping etc. that I felt that really add something to the track.

I like this, makes me think of an urban streetscape at dawn.
Did you build everything around the field recording?

It's the detail that gives a track some longevity imo, good for repeat listening.
It's lush ..

Not initially, after I had the rough sketch I thought it'd be neat to add some kind of field recording. I did later adjust some automation and stuff to fit in with the flow of the field recording.

Ambient dub, it sounds relaxing and undeground (not the tipical commercial "chill out"). A bit more bass maybe?

Nice ambient piece. My input:
- Fatter / thicker bass. The tops half of the track need a good foundation to rest on.
- The opening is a bit rough! Should be toned in nicely, not just "pthschhhhh" all at once!

This is nice man. I think the overall space and feel sounds good to me, I like the pianos and the evolving feeling of it, the percussion parts are sitting well to my ears.

I think the noise could come down a bit to let everything else breathe a bit more and personally, I find the dub chords kind of detract from the overall vibe and just sound a bit out of place with the rest of the track, that could just be a taste thing though. I think if they were gone the track wouldn't loose anything and if anything, could gain a deeper feeling which is where it leans towards.

As to the bass - It could perhaps be a bit 'rounder' but level wise I think it's sitting quite nicely, wouldn't fret about it, it's not bloating the track but adds something to it.

Nice work here - look forward to hearing more of your tracks.
