Squill - Init

Post by Squill »

After a neccisary break, got back into the studio this weekend and finished this up. Bit of a fusion type of track. Let me know what you guys think. Open to all feedback, mix wise/musically :D

Would personally pull back the kick a bit, maybe just compress the tail or something as it seems really big for this kind of song. Arrangement wise it seems great, don't hear much music like this anymore, really enjoyed it.

EDIT: Just saw your post on my track about my kick being too tight haha. I think we can credit this one to difference in taste.

It's very well produced to me. Very well.

The only issue is that the kick is too muted, as in it's just crying out for some more of the top to be let through, or something with a more snappy transient perhaps.

Kick topend sounds fine to me personally. I'd agree that the tail on the kick reverb is a bit long and unwieldy, though. The pads are a bit thin, considering they are the main melodic element in the track. Could be a bit more chunky and warm, I'd say.

I think this point has been made a bunch of times on your track but again, it's begging for some nice glue and warming up on the mixbus.

And this is a matter of opinion but I think the break is way too long, almost a minute and the track isn't even 6 minutes. If you have a break that long, you gotta do some epic uplifting trance type shit but currently there's just nothing happening for over 40 seconds.

Kind of get the comment on the kick, when it's almost naked at the start it really gives that lo-fi 90's vibe. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, though I'd also boost the top end slightly if it were my track, if only just to make it gel more with the hats/percussion. Though when they come in it does fill it out, so maybe the solution would be automation, or just a slight boost and the cut into the hats a little, as the contrast does seem a little jarring when you focus on it.

The melody, especially when it combines with the pad is a little too trancy for my taste, if it was my track I'd chuck the pad or lower it an octave, or maybe even more, use s&h on the arp and throw an envelope filter, a ringmod and a delay on the main melody (and then I'd probably chuck it and throw in a half assed acid line just to be done with it:), though something like that's clearly not what you're trying to do so I'll shut up about it :P
At least I think you could consider having some slight pitch drift on the pad to make it sound less 'pristine', and a little tube warmth to make it match the vibe of the kick. Though I agree the whole mix could do with some slight saturation to make it glue some more.

Also not too sure about the percussion loop you've thrown in there towards the end, sounds a bit disconnected. If you want to make it work it definitely needs some love.

All in all a solid track, could do with some tweaks but nearly there.

The bass is definitely more defined in v2.

I like this one. Trance-y, but not overly cheesy. The only major change I'd personally do would be the part after the second, short breakdown. I'd make it longer and really let it rip in an epic way, now it's basically just an outro for the DJ to mix the next track in with.

I'd like more top end on the kick or layered with shaker. You had that 303 energy in the first section but then it vanished into the abyss. I feel this is a let down and saving it for later as an element of climax would've done more for the track. I would also like some filter automation excitement on the synths but maybe you were just going for a meditative vibe.

Only listened to the second version. I agree with the kick being too muted/lacking high-end, unless you open it over time, I think it would balance it against the rest of the percussion. The Arp and melody is not really to my taste but reminds of stuff from the 90s. There was something with the recording that I felt needed some air, it feels really boxed in and lacking in high mids.

Cool track, don't mean this as a criticism but it's bang "on trend" for modern slightly-proggy melodic techno stuff that I'm hearing a lot of right now. I'm a big prog fan so love the arps and dreamy stuff but I can understand why someone else might not like that. Solid production all round.
