Node Presents...Dryad.

Dryad is the Pseudonym of Lawrence Michell: an Adelaide-based techno artist, DJ and Event Organizer. Whilst he originally hails from the United Kingdom, back in 2005 Lawrence moved to Australia and spent the good deal of a decade residing in Melbourne.

In 2012, Lawrence co-founded the infamous techno event collective 'Billion Underground' with his friend Dave Thompson. Alongside Dave, a techno artist operating under the name “Lost Few”, Lawrence and a handful of others have worked tirelessly to host a handful of high-calibre underground techno events.

Billion Underground gigs have seen billing by many esteemed artists in the worldwide techno scene such as Pfirter, Drumcell, Krenzlin and Ancient Methods; and have included support from many well-known quality local DJs like D-Rex, Gene Hoffman, Adrian Bell, Andrew Till and Simon Slieker.

Lawrence describes the name and project of Dryad as “compartmentalized and re-imagined techno concepts from distant nights and memories. Applying total recall in productions to capture the spirit and energy of techno (from South Australia).”
After plenty of time on the dance floors of the UK, Europe, Melbourne and elsewhere - the current project (of Dryad) represents a re-focus into the creative aspects of techno. Some more recent inspiration for this re-focus came about whilst he was thinking back to 2008, when Samuli Kemppi played one of his demos on his (then) new show “Deep Space Helsinki”.

Dryad had been heavily inspired by listening to one of Kemppi's live sets. After this first listen, he proceeded to fire up his (then new) version of Logic and knuckle down to write a track.
Despite the limitations of being pretty new to production and having almost no technical knowledge, he pushed through every obstacle and managed to carve out an icy deep track, 'Iron Ore', and sent it off to Samuli. Kemppi liked it and played it as an opening track for one of his shows. To this day, it sits amongst some very accomplished artists in the resulting mix tracklist.

Lawrence says the moral of the story is that to create something decent: you only need inspiration. And that particular memory was the cue to really get back into it. To signify this re-focus, the guise of Dryad was created – serving as a mental cue for techno projects, improvement, learning and the fear of not doing what you love.
