Re: Group Learning _ subsekt sound design school :)
Ok, so heres my take.
I don't normally use samples and synthesize all my kicks (actually most of my sounds), so as to get it right straight away. I find it easier and faster to tune the kicks to the track that way. I did however try to have a go at manipulating sampels, seeing it's something i'd like to learn more.
I tried to turn the kick into something more stomping and dirtier, but outside the context of a track i find it quite hard to decide where or when it'd sound "right". Bass and kick to me are something very complimentary, and can really alterate the feel of a track.
anyways, here's what i did to it.
loaded the file in sampler, so as to have a bit more flexibility on the sample, and use the built-in filter, the extra LFOs and the OSC FM modulation. This allows to modify the transient of the kick in quite an interesting way, as well as adding some other harmonics.
lo-passed the kick, to get rid of some of the saturation if had that i didn't like, applied a fast enveloppe, to still get the snap out.
Added a very little LFO on the sample start. This allows to give any samples a very slight variation, and keep them more alive. I do this on everything basically.
added some saturation until it sounded "nice"
more saturation, then used the AMP to saturate and EQ the sample in a nice way, then eroded and bitcrushed the sample very slightly to add some air. I usually do this with the D16 Decimort, but for the sake of making the steps replicable, i used the ableton plugins and a freely available one.

Nice one Opus. I like those kinds of kicks & I often use a similar chain of processing units.
I use Decimort as well for dirt & airy bitcrush / 12bit drum-machine feel. It's a great plugin. I used the Toneboosters Time Machine in my first example because its free. But I really like that one as well to either compliment the Decimort or add a more sandy touch on the sounds.

hey john, for some reason the images don't show for me...ICN wrote:OK.. Heres my attempt.
by the way, i used the exact same process as i employed the first time round, but with the new sample. This one came out way better IMO. and it stayed in key!

I've put these vids on the blog.. but its worth throwing them in here too. Theres 5 in this series, which are all on YT.
Fxpansion Tremor - Kicks, snares, claps and crashes. It sounds great. Polyrhythmic step-sequencer too! *drools*
You can get a good idea of the process even if you dont have it.

More super dirty kicks!
This time I used a sampler emulator / bit crusher, a delay with FX unit & a Pre-amp / EQ.
The example is pretty extreme but its easier to hear when the signal is 100% wet. This is a nice type of kick you can mix & balance nice with the Decimort W/D knob for more or less nice dirt.

Re: Group Learning _ subsekt sound design school :)
Sounds good Mattias. Just one question... what is the delay for? Someone else mentioned using it and I'd never normally think of using it in this context.
Re: Group Learning _ subsekt sound design school :)
The delay is for filtered feedback, signal which you can overdrive in a way I like when it comes to vintage delays (the TAL ones have a nice nasty ring to them which I like when you overdrive the feedback signal). You can damp and open up the resonance nicely as well.

is there a cut-off date for this? perhaps we can name this thread:
Group Learning _ subsekt kicks design school
...leave it open and proceed to the next element with a new thread?

Yeah Man.. We should probably get on to bass right now..
We should all use the same kick going into the next thread?
Which one is best? Can everyone listen to them all again & give an opinion?
If anyone hasn't participated in it so far.. please do. Its never too late.

I concur, this should be the "Group Learning _ subsekt kicks design school". Maybe these kinds of thread should be a sticky on top since kicks and other sounds are stuff that always interest people. My guess is that topics like these will be alive for a very long time iwth lots of pages!

Re: subsekt sound design school _ KICKS
OK.. I've tidied this thread up a bit. The idea was that I was going to do a poll, but I've had a rethink
We've got a really nice selection of kicks (9 - yeah - count them - 9).. and it would be a shame to limit ourselves to just one kick & potentially miss out different approaches to different sounds.
How about everyone choose their own / or favourite - and make a bassline? Simple : )
I'll make a new thread http://www.subsekt.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=698
(I'm not going to individually sticky these btw.. but I will sticky a single "master thread" with links to each one)

Here's my kick. It comes with a load of reverb built in, so it's a bit more than just a kick.

Re: subsekt sound design school _ KICKS
This is what i came up with, pretty much some standard procedures to give it more body, added some tail and beefed it up because i like my kicks to be obese Im trying my best to give the other 2 threads a go aswell.
First pic i prepared the original sample, cut away the trailing silence, shaved off some of the attack because i found it to be to "clicky" at start. Added a HP24 to get rid of unwanted sub freq. Next up added a saturator to give the kick some more presence & a dynamic tube to warm it up the lows.
I found the source material to be quite sterile and clean, so i added a small amount of redux and some overdrive to give it some more of a grainy texture. As i still wasnt entirely happy with it, decided to add some reverb with a very short predelay so i could get some more pronounced tail on the kick. I love the SPL transient designer, forgot to make a screenie of it's settings though, but i just added a bit of an accent at the attack and release so the sound popped out a bit more. Lastly, added an EQ8 to cleanup unwanted freqs at the lows, duplicated it with exact same settings, so i'm sure im left over with a pretty clean sound. Didnt worry 'bout the highs because the original material was already decently EQ'ed if i remember correctly.
Doubled the EQ
And a pretty before & after screenie of the kick makeover
Comments always welcome.
