Proably my lazyness, but i use my initial comp with great adjustments. Then if i make a kind of high-shelf-down kick (what i often do) i have to give to it some shaping to let it come easier through my mix. What are you doing with your compressor that is requiring a transient shaper on a kick drum of all things? anything your transient shaper is doing, your compressor can do, or undo.

Pretty much find a good starting point with the "studio" presets and play around with it from there until happy. I'm using it anywhere from 10-30 ips but I'm mostly messing with the repro heads, gap width and azimuth is just sweet to play with on kick's and of course driving the input a littlemsl wrote:arkos wrote:U-he Satin is voodoo for kick's.

I know this is not going to be popular here, but this is what I do (but I am still learning, so my reasoning is that I work with one thing only and limit myself, then once I have some skills, i'll move on to bigger things, hopefully some hardware soon.)
909 emulator/ saturate/ eq (to make sure i'm compressing what I want to compress)/ compressor/ then eq again.
Then often I'll reverb it (same process as above) , glue the both together then resample both.
Then pitch to taste etc in a sampler.

reverb -> compressor -> saturation -> multiband compression -> multiband saturation -> vintage mojo shit -> compressor -> compressor -> compressor -> expander -> gate -> eq with +15db at 40 hz. in that precise order.

Like I said, you can undo the work of a transient shaper with a compressor and vica versa.
If you have destroyed your kick drums transient peak attack with your compressor, you have overdone it, just relax the attack a touch.
Transient shapers can be great tools, but on kicks, where you are dealing with really big dynamic changes over extremely short timescales, you can introduce headroom mashing, signal clipping nastiness.
I have to deal with transient shaper problems occasionally on dance tracks where people have shoved em on kicks to get more punch, but all they have done is ended up with a ridiculous transient hit, but not necessarily more punch, and it can be a fucking bastard to deal with, especially for vinyl cuts.

In my current, gearless and cashless situation it goes a little something like this:
1) Pick or make a kick sound that doesn't completely suck
2) Run it through the freeware SonEQ plugin (thanks for the tip Rktic!)
3) ????
4) Profit
I might do something else to it too, of course, but that's the default line that I know will get half-decent results.
