You'd be surprised.
It's not something that should ever be a general rule, but you can cut as high as 40hz.
All depends on the curve and the bass.
I've cut from 40 many times when mastering to get wildy out of control bass in check. Some people have monitors that don't go that low and end up with massive peaks at 30, 40 hz

are you talking about a steep cut at 40hz?

maybe if the fundamental tone is on or above low E, but you'll start losing important frequency information if there are lower tones

I've worked with bass down to 25hz on a great soundsystem, with pure sine waves in a live set though

Oh no, no need for a really steep cut, it`s all about context. If there are super lows there in a meaningful way then you keep them there. If it`s just mush then you trim it down.
Occasionally you can cut steep at 40hz and it won`t have a harmful effect.

Depends is the only right answer.

Sure I`ve run down extremely low on soundsystems (especially our own where we ran Turbosound TSW124`s down to 17hz), but it`s rare a system runs as low as 25hz meaningfully in clubland.

Ah, that makes more sense to me.

for the nice flow i cut everything below 90hz, sometimes it help. if it doesn't, i cut my wrists (both for stereo enhancing).

Just remember kids, when slitting your wrists.

nah, too hardcore, too much cutting kills the vibrations! short small cuts so the chicks are impressed!

Low frequencies are over rated. Cut everything below 600hz. Just fuck that shit off. And whilst we're at it, fuck everything above 15k off too. My fucked up old ears can barely hear that shit anyway.

this is pretty much the funniest thing I read in a long long time...

you almost made me spill my beer on my old 'n trusty main set of 88 keys, you fucking Swedish cunt !

I'd personally use a 96db HP filter though, which gets sidechained to move 300Hz upwards every time a hi-hat/snare/cymbal/ride/cowbell or screaming cat-sample comes in !

nah man, a good laugh is worth a LOT these days.
and my old XV88 has served me well for approx 13 years now,
so some day it's gotta die.
only problem would be that I wouldn't have the cash to pay for a replacement for the moment...

I could also just drink less beer, that might help as well...

(thinks for about 0.5 seconds)

nahhhhh...

Heavy bass music EQ on sub / kick

hi there,

i'm really interested in heavy bass low end for example what Polegroup label releases (Reeko, Mulero, Exium). Many years on making music and still i havent got what i am looking for on subs / kicks Eq.

Apart of sidechain subs and sidechained reverbs tips for get power low ends, i would like to know how you manage Eq kicks and subs in general (i know that each case is different)

Here are to examples with great low end and powerful basslines similar to what i am asking for.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER9fO2vFYBU

in this Reeko track bassline seems to be a low pitched toms but well difference from kick..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsHUCe9NZ50

i this Rrose track unless has a great low end, both kick and bassline are so clear.. i think bassline is not sidechaied and is sounding at the same time than kick.. and still both are so powerful. THis is what i asking for.

Most of the times its difficult for me and i would like to know in general what kind of EQ methods do you use for it.

thanks in advance and sorry if my english is not good

I wouldn`t consider either of those tunes even vaguely heavy in the low end. Kinda standard techno-ey low end really, easy to deal with. Nothing like the huge subs of dub or dubstep.

Theory is simple.

Keep everything out of the way of your bass if you want it to appear to be large.
Roll off higher up can actually make bass appear to be lower, so rolling from 30, or even 40-50 hz can give more headroom for larger bass in the mix.
If your bass is very low bass, then have your kick mainly high bass, and vice versa..
cut a "hole" in your bass where the dominant kick frequency is.
Compress your subs to control the levels, as you don`t want wild dynamics in very low bass if you want to maintain weight.
Sometimes sidechain can help, how invisible this sidechaining is depends on the relationship between release, threshold and ratio.
Less treble can mean the same as more bass.

Buss compression, either on the mix or group, can also help low end elements keep out of each others way without sidechaining.
Use compressor sidechain EQ (rather than triggered sidechain) to tune what the compressor is responding to, so that the kick can punch through the bass in a more natural and musical way, over the whole mix or buss, rather than using a sidechain trigger.

Sticky that in some sort of "Subsekt-all-around-production-information" thread.
