Sub Bass Mixing
Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
Yep as Msl said under 30 you can pretty safely cut.
in my experience there's no rules. Not quite what you're asking but.... Use you ears - only rule is watch out for frequencies masking each other - so if there's too many sounds of the same frequency - be it subs, kicks, synths, whatever - the mix will sound dull if too many sounds occupy the same frequency space.
Another way of putting it is if u have a different tracks occupying different frequency spaces then the mix is gonna be clearer.
Only just really learned this recently.
But again - even this isn't an iron rule as often I find things in my mind that shouldn't work sound great!

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
I think I generally leave it and let it get cut at the mastering stage (if that's what voidloss does)
But yes ears are better than a visual representation imo. Sometimes the muddy rumble works for me and adds to the vibe of the track.

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
At mastering I will cut the lows on a track.
For vinyl the cut is generally sub 30 or 20, sometimes higher, but it depends on how much attack is in the low end as well.
Generally I cut shallow from 30 then steep from 20, but again, sometimes a client may want a louder final master and so to get that higher final loudness I may have to cut the low end higher to be able to push the level without causing distortion.
For my own stuff every channel that is not part of the bass gets cut, some stuff like hi hats the low cut can go way up in to the mid range or even high mid range depending on what else is in the track.
You can really cut quite a lot of lows out of some stuff and have it not being noticeable, always do it in the mix, and not with the part soloed, so you get mix context. Obviously don`t go overboard as your mix can end up sounding thin or scooped.

Yep, now you say it so obviously but I haven't been doing this...Lost to the Void wrote: always do it in the mix, and not with the part soloed, so you get mix context.
Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
I always cut all my tracks at 120hz with a 48db filter. Works every fkn time! Amazing

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
Sorry to be nitpicking, but that should say high pass filter.Tony wrote: Do you apply a low pass filter for all the frequencies under 40 Hz ? (For the Kick & Bass)
And of course, yes, cut lows out! Most tracks at 150hz or higher, kick and sub around 40 or 50hz.

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
I don't mean to derail from the original question but it's on the same topic and don't think it deserves its own thread.
So, bearing in mind that the lowest cutoff is 30hz, what frequency range do you guys aim for when designing your bass? Would it be better for the main fundamental in my bass to be above 40hz? maybe 50? The reason I ask is that if your bass sits at 35 or 40hz, when you hard cut below 30, you would be taking out some of the sloping frequencies below the main fundamental, taking away from the original overall bass tone. Or maybe I'm just talking nonsense

Because hipsters.
Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
I get that they are trying to go for the whole recorded on a smartphone in a warehouse sound, but they could have at least left some of the punch in.Alume wrote:That tune is shitty. Why would you leave the bass out just to bust peoples balls. Its not funny. DAmmit

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
If you want to cut the frequencies under 40hz, you should use a high pass filter not a low pass (as willemb said)Tony wrote:Hello,
I read that it's "good" the cut the frequencies under 40 Hz, what do you think about it ?
Do you apply a low pass filter for all the frequencies under 40 Hz ? (For the Kick & Bass)
You apply the filter on each track or only on the master ?
Thanks all and sorry if my english is not perfect, unfortunately, i'm french
Best,
Tony

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
high passing at 40hz maybe makes sense if you are doing live sound at a rock concert
definitely not for techno though
