frequency range
frequency range
so - true or false?
a spectrum analyzer placed on the master out put should show a generally level line across the frequency range and not have a particular area (eg the low end) sticking up further than the rest of the frequencies.

Re: frequency range
False.
Evidence: Heres one from a Forward Strategy Group Track.. Is this what you are talking about?
My Kick is always popping up the loudest.. the rest of it has some peaks. but it fairly level apart from the kick
or are ya on about summat else?

yeah thats it. the low end is always sticking up.
something was tellin me its not meant to
but when i cut the low end away it sounds shit.
wasnt sure if it was just that i was getting a bass boom cos of my room or if it is ok like that
but yeah good idea. i shd have just put the analyzer on some of my fav tracks . duh

Re: frequency range
put a few tracks together in ableton in a mix and the analyzer on the master is coming up like a batwing shape almost
peak at 65hz, slope down towards the mids . a mini peak at 330 hz then slopes on down to 1khz
then slopes back up again to a peak at 15kz with a sharp cut off at that point

Re: frequency range
Useful here are equal loudness (Fletcher-Munson) curves, which basically means that at low listening levels, your bass needs to be way louder to be heard... this curve gets shallower as volume level goes up, so for sound system type levels, that curve seen above will get flatter... it's more about a happy medium than anything else, as far as I can see!
Re: frequency range
fletcher munson curves - ive heard of them!
better get reading my eq chapters again.
in my previous comment above i should add that i was using commercially released tracks, not my own.

Re: frequency range
Ideally the levels should be flat, and in general music you aim for this, but dance music is bass heavy, kicks dominate the mix, so naturally there is a bump at the low end and the is slopes gently to the right.
Most importantly the slope should be an even slope, no big bumps or dips along the way, this shows a good even distribution.
In mastering my job is to try to even up these bumps and dips.
But be careful when using spectrum analysers.
what you need to be looking at is average levels, or rms, and not peak, and also set your update rate to a low and slow setting, which again, pushes the display to show average trends.

Re: frequency range
i've always watched peaks because it's never occurred to me to watch averages, but it totally makes sense.

Nice tip. What would you consider a low and slow setting?Lost to the Void wrote:...and also set your update rate to a low and slow setting, which again, pushes the display to show average trends.

Re: frequency range
An update between 1 every half second up to once a second is pretty good for getting overall trends in the mix providing the analyser is averaging for those intervals

Re: frequency range
Great thread, always wanted to use the analyser more but didn't really know how to read it!
Re: frequency range
What Gav said! Never really knew how to read it. But thanks to this thread, i have a much better idea.

Please note that analyzers are merely a tool to help your ears out not to overtake their roles!

Good point Mattias. I consider it as a tool to assist. I always rely on what i hear in the end

yeah ears first of course, but in the absence of knowing what acoustic probs my room is causing , the analyzer is handy for a bit of confirmation
