Modular Beep
Modular Beep
Hey guys, i always tried to do this kind of modular beep, don't know if this name is correct, but i tried so many times, and for hours to do this kind of sound, that im just sick of searching for it and never finding it,how you think this sound was made, per example on this track from mattias fridell,i guess this one was made with analogue hardware, but i don't have any,so any tips on how to do it in a DAW?
Here it is the track:
youtu.be/S9YrHjtdpkE
the sound im looking for starts at 0:34.

Re: Modular Beep
Sounds like just a sine wave. S+H to pitch might be what you're looking for

Re: Modular Beep
I think its just a midi part with hi-res?
Not sure of the wave. Hmmm
Mattias is good - but he'd have to be really lucky to get a S&H of that perfect riff? haha
Does have a S&H vibe off it alright

oh my god,it's so fucking easy,i found it hahah, well i didn't found it,but almost there haha.
but this LFO things is random and when i deactivate de "R" From random on operator it's still random...

What wave Pedro? Is it a sine?
I dont think S&H LFO is the way to go if thats what you are doing. Waaaaaay too random.
Haha - Will be interesting to see what Mattias says ;D

I'm not around Live for the moment, but I'm guessing the "R" is probably for "Retrigger",mainst09 wrote:oh my god,it's so fucking easy,i found it hahah, well i didn't found it,but almost there haha.

if activated it means the LFO gets retriggered with every new key that gets pushed.
if not activated, the LFO keeps on free-running.
With an S&H waveform that won't have much effect at all,
but with other LFO waveforms it does.

Re: Modular Beep
ow, and btw : an S&H LFo will always be random normally.
There's no non-random S&H as far as I know.
can't listen to the sound for the moment,
but if the pitch changes seemingly random, but it's still a sort of returning melody, then I'd try to use a step sequencer.
If the notes seem to change at the speed of the track, but still random, then it can be done with S&H but synced to tempo of the track.

Re: Modular Beep
Just had a listen to the sound.
You don't need hardware at all for something like this.
You can do sounds like this with any kind of synth with the right modulators, and otherwise you could try to achieve a similar effect by using clip envelopes as a sort of LFO-surrogates and/or step sequencer.
It's too repetitive so it'c ertainly not done with an S&H
I'd use a step sequencer and start messing with that.
You might also have fun results if you use 2 downwards Saw LFO's and put them out of phase of each other and make the first modulate the pitch a bit more than the 2nd.
That will give you a similar kind of "walk down walk a little back up walk down walk a little back up" - melody like it is a bit in the track above.

Re: Modular Beep
I love those types of sounds, perfect for spacey vibes.
There are lots of ways to make these types of sequences really.
In this case it's no hardware, and certainly no S&H involved. It's NI Massive. I can double check exactly what I did in this tune but I'm pretty sure I just used 2 OSC with wavetable turned to a Sinewave then the pitch of the first OSC is modulated by one ADSR unit and the second OSC is modulated by LFO and both OSC goes to the step sequencer in Massive.

Re: Modular Beep
ok mattias, i don't have vst's,just the synths from the DAW,but i'll try something similar there.
Thanks for this man

Re: Modular Beep
Hello Mattias,
where is the ADSR unit on massive and the LFO i can't find them.
Cheers

Re: Modular Beep
1 ENV 2 ENV 3 ENV 4 ENV 5 LFO 6 LFO and so on.
Remember Massive is semi-modular so you have to route the destinations where you want your ENV to appear etc. Like connect ENV 1 to the OSC 1 pitch and so on

Re: Modular Beep
Ok so I checked the track and made some screenshots of how I made the sound:
Massive Overview: Performer 1: Performer 2: Step sequencer: So in other words:
Sine OSC1 (+17)Sine OSC2 (+29) with ENV1 modulating their pitch with value -64.
Then Step sequencer modulated both their pitch with +55 on OSC1 and - 55 on OSC2.
Performer 2 & 3 modulated both OSC Amp level.
The filters are 80% Parallel and shares close to the same mix value between them. Filter 1 is Daft and Filter 2 is Acid. Then its just slight chorus added and slight dimension spreader.
