Although you will more than likely find that you are turning the knob down in mast cases. Lets say you have a one-shot audio sample (lets say a wav file to make things simple) of a bass drum and then you insert the satson channel. Its more than likely that the sample will have pretty hot levels already and will usually have the VU meter slammed to the top not moving. So just use the gain knob to turn it down to around 0 (some times it does need turning up but I find this to be pretty rare).

Surely you would want to be under 0db if you have further processing to do in the chain? Shouldn't you leave about -3db after Satson if you are adding alternative distortion plugins etc?

Ah ok - this is VU we are talking about, in simple terms a VU meter kind of reads between the average and the peak values. 0dB on a VU is not the same as 0dB peak on say your main channel out... its lower (depending on the actual VU meter). So for example, something reading 0dB on the VU may only be reading -12 dB on the actual channel meter.

It will make more sense if you try it to see what I mean.

Also I thought I read in this thread that people were plonking Satson at the very end of their chains?

First in the chain is just how I use it. I personally use my channel output fader to set the final output of the channel and the satson is just there as a trim plug first in my chain. I guess putting it last in the chain is if you want to use it for a bit of saturation. Like I say, I use a different tool mostly for that particular job. But yeah, I can see the merits of using the Satson last in the chain.

You could use it first in the chain AND last in the chain if desired (first in the chain to set gain and trim - then last in the chain to control console style saturation). I might even try that myself for a mix and see how it goes.

hey guys some nice techniques here. the only thing i am wondering is why somehow this technique of mixing into an ssl style console in the digital is not very common. so many things are always discussed in terms of making things warmer like: compression, tape saturation, distortion but this here is a very subtle and nice approach. have to try this at home definitley and get into it. thx

By the way, on the note on the Tessla Pro MKII, that plugin alone made me able to use Tambourines samples from classic drum-machines. I always wanted to add some raw funk using Linndrum tambs for example but they were always so nasty and harsh, especially in the top end transient department. Tessla made those tambs sound brilliant!

Hah, I`m a paying customer, I do think companies like this though, small, personal, with great products kept at an affordable price, are just worth supporting.
Plugins that cost the same price as hardware are bullshit.
I know loads of people who have got the Satsons (I got them via recommendation) hopefully the fact they are getting some money and credit for their hard work means they will make more good stuff.
