I usually use the subtractive method if I get that far, although I've just added a nanoKONTROL2 and nanoPAD2 to my little setup so I can do some jamming and see what happens, hopefully it will help me past the stage of creating endless amounts of loops ;)

I've just got a Nanokontrol 2. Really like it. Decent enough for what it is like.

Yep I agree, cheap and cheerful but does the job, just having the transport and channel controls is so much better :)

I've got a beef with subtractive arrangement. It's definitely an easy way to structure a track, and cures the ails of getting stuck in loops, but I feel like it's part of the reason we see so much formulaic stuff.

I can't say I'm immune, as I use it about half the time for speed. For those who use it regularly, how do you approach subtractive arrangement so that it doesn't become stale and predictable? I'm thinking I need to start dragging things back from arrangement into session to re-jam them out...

just use it as a starting point and work a lot further from there.
Like a scetch in a scetch book.

be critical each time you listen, if it's too predictable, change it.

I usually make an arrangment by jamming with my APC40 from the session view and recording it into arrangment, and from that arrangment I work further fine-tuning automation and little errors here and there.
