Tune it down, smeary subtle reverb to fill out the gaps between the note triggers. Eventual Sidechain with the kick, very sparse however, shove of the highest frequencies. Pitch shifting delay / reverb with up-tuning (or eventually a second Ride taking care of the higher tune) with low volume. Auto-Pan.

Re: killer ride, how to?
Aint listened to the sample Rob.. but I do the same as Matt.
Pitched down (sometimes)..reverb as insert - fiddle with the decay & % wet.. maybe a default ping pong from live on "3" (whatever that is lol ) - mess with the feedback / wet % - bit of light sidechain. EQ out the lows..
Guys.. what EQ'ing is "typical" for rides? I never know whether to shave a bit off the top or not. It keeps me awake at night.
Ah no.. but usually it sounds a lot better a bit lower in volume. Its more enjoyable to have it up high.. but I dont think it needs to be as loud as you think.
Dont seem to have any probs with the top freq's with it being lower down - maybe due to the volume thing.
Still.. would be cool to hear some 5c's

those rides sound nice man, and solid advice from mattias too.Rob Mitshi wrote:got this now http://soundcloud.com/rob-mitshi/nasia-tech2-rob-m

i was going to reply before and say i dont know but it may be a little bit of eq, modulation fx and sidechain (or volume envelope), and a lot of context.
i dont know what eq would be typical either but i would be squashing or pushing them so they fit flatish between about the 7 and 10 k up to 15 k or higher range, depending on the levels of what was directly below it in the spectrum.. i could be way off here tho.ICN wrote:Guys.. what EQ'ing is "typical" for rides? i do some crazy eq gymnastics stuff up around there sometimes which is probably unnecessary. i use lots of cuts and boosts to try and round things off.

I like to use a bit of saturation aswell. nuthin like a good clattery ride!

Re: killer ride, how to?
I do my best to avoid using rides, it is a bit of a techno cliche now, and techno should never be about doing the same thing.
If I do want that ride "effect" then I dip into my field recordings and use radio noise, sandpaper noise, rain, shingle beaches, ringing train screeches, something with a bit of rhythm in it already preferably. Then reverb, bit of sidechain comp maybe, or delay.
Experiment, this is the essence of techno.

I like to destroy my rides. Erosion/distortion/reverb/stretch. I too use sounds that are recorded from my field recorder. I'll always love the 909 but it has been cained for 25 years and I'm bored of the standard 909 ride and don't use it very often these days.

I'll keep my rides clean sometimes a light reverb.

im havin this problem too. ok so im a complete noob but i think its the wrong note pattern i use. is it best to use all 16ths or 8ths. its confusin when you listen to tunes.
other tunes sound like they have more notes than they probably do. when i do it it sounds crap. will give some of these tricks a shot. nice one fellas

Re: killer ride, how to?
In most of my released tracks from 2002-2010 or so I used a very simple Ride pattern which I liked (well I still do) and it's just about accent. On the kick notes step (if you use standard 4 x 4 so: 1, 5, 9 & 13) you trigger a Ride with the low accent on the 909, and on the offbeat notes (assuming standard hihat offbeat 3, 7, 11 & 15) you use the hard accent.
from here it might sound a bit "loose" so it can be a good ideas to sidechain it with the kick (not too much just a little ducking), or like back in the good old days send the Ride to the kick/bass bus channel with a common bus compressor ducking the Rides. Thats all there is to it and by far the most used way to play a Ride in Techno. If you dont have a 909 or a VST emulation just use lower / higher velocity.

Re: killer ride, how to?
The ride in this track i made a year ago or so, was pretty tight, but still it missed something, (think panning) I dont know it just doesnt sounds as magical to me as some released tracks do,
the ride's in this track where vengeance samples, the ride i use now is the 909 drumrack from ableton itself. Ive been looking for a good tutorial on ableton, but havent found one atm. Love al the input here, I'll keep trying

Re: killer ride, how to?
I love rides, sometimes I try to shuffle them a bit or use groove pattern to give some groovy going, but rides are always highly enjoyable, when they start to flow you can feel the energy and the warmth spreading around. love the rides! usually I cut the high freqs and the mid-low as well try to keep them separated from hats

I think Mattias pattern is perfect but I will add a little shuffle (like a roll or something) at the end of the 8th or 16th bars to anticipate the next bars, also sometimes I used triplet pattern to give a jazzy flavour.

Re: killer ride, how to?
Some great tips here.
I find a sample that sounds right to begin with, rather than changing the pitch on it. That just sounds wrong to me. It definitely loses something when you do that.
+1 for a drum synth. The D16 ride is all you need. It may not be a real 909 but it gets you there. simple patterns are usually best with a bit of reverb and a sidechain compressor after that.

Re: killer ride, how to?
Is it 1/32 no pattern?
Re: killer ride, how to?
Sounds to me like it's a standard 909 ride running on 16ths or 8ths. Side chain and velocity are the key.
Re: killer ride, how to?
Hi there,
Try this; get a nice Ride sample & a reverb with a Freeze option (the one in Ableton for example). Set the reverb to a long decay and automate the Freeze ON a few ms after the Ride runs through it. You should be getting a constant Ride tone which you can then record & throw in a sampler. After that you can use side chain to get it to groove with your track. I find this can be really cool if you want to avoid the attack phase of the sample & get sort of a constant Ride sound.
(cool forum btw)
