Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
Sounds from that article like a combination of The Internet and lack of journalistic integrity or ability is what's ruining dance music. Low barrier to entry.
Surely the very thing that makes 'the underground' underground is that it isn't being talked about by low rate, shitty online 'journalists' on dance music websites.

The result is an influx of less-than-ideal candidates, and when there’s high demand for content from these media outlets, more and more young, inexperienced and uninformed writers end up filling in that content
Either a great understanding of irony or less self reflection than Dracula.

When i first started making techno music i thought was release worthy, i wanted to release every track i made pretty much.
When i look back, i cringe at how inexperienced i was and how much more humbled/matured i became in a short space of time.
But thats all part of the journey anyway so u cant start bashing the 'amateurs'.
Dont take life so seriously
Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
Yeah it's all part of the journey. Everyone will have releases they regret, I do. But it's a learning curve. Innit

Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
I sort of agree with this article, in terms of approach, not content.
Amateur practices are causing wank-ness, but amateur music?
I see it as the same old shit of crappy journalism, combined with peoples general lack of fucking presence to go looking for good music, instead waiting for it to arrive on a spoon for them, and the fact that typical big music industry bullshit has now spunked it`s way in to Techno ie paid press reviews and so on.
I`m actually just starting an experiment by engaging with PR for my Label relaunch at the moment, and I`m making it very clear I don`t want any cringey, hype word nonsense going on. Nor any paid reviews.
I`m very conflicted over this, but I want to support my artists.
I will report back as to how this all turns out.
Is dance music "ruined"?
Well, I have no difficulty finding original, well produced music I like, by interesting artists with integrity who don`t engage in the whole weekly press photo media whore bullshit side of things.
I attend (as a punter) and play at parties that keep it real in terms of the music and attitude (150-800 people sized events in general).
So, as far as I am concerned, the underground I immerse myself in is fine thanks.

That's what I thought.. So the dude who wrote this article did not start as an amateur?! It's hard to be patient when you're dreaming of getting your shit out there one day thoughLost to the Void wrote:I sort of agree with this article, in terms of approach, not content.

Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
bogus article...
There are a lot of skilled underground or amateur producers, on the other side there are a lot of some shitty ones to. Annyway, who controls artists income is the audience... you can't make money of the dance scene if nobody likes your music. So something must be likable about it, even if it might sound crappy to others...
If the audience wants original music, they should go look for it, there is plenty out there (like Void said). If they are willing to accept mediocre/unoriginal music, so be it (hell, I even do lots of times), there is enough space for both. And who is there to decide what is good and what not...
With regards to partys and DJ's, one can look up the line-up most of the times, if you don't like it... don't go... life can be so simple... It's all just a mather of taste and what your looking for at the moment. I have nights out in whitch I like to get wasteds and chill out with friends while the DJ fades away to the background, nothing wrong with that. I also like to have nights out where I really listen to a DJ set and leave if I don't like it...
The way this article states that a whole scene has fallen victim to amateurs on a rampage or money sharks is very narrow minded and takes away the responcibility from the audience, whitch (at least for me, also being audience) is insulting.

Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
I'm more concerned with pop ruining the scene.
Amateur music I'm 110% all for. Amateur knucklehead-ness and stubbornness with no will to learn I'm 110% against.

Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
Why would it be a problem if people don't want to learn new things? Perhaps the music they make is likeble enough for them and they don't feel the need to advance... what's the problem with that? (not to troll, just curious)

Unwillingness to progress is the acceptance of mediocrity. It goes against the natural flow of evolution.

but evidence of the opposite is everywhere around us...

Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
There is evidence that the majority is ok with mediocrity because that's what is being pushed by media, and that's the path of least resistance, just be ok, don't try TOO hard. Like you once said, nobody wants to put in some fucking effort anymore. The only place I am for mediocrity is in bussiness, because if you get too big you either become a shark, or get eaten by them. Atleast that's the case of my country in EVERY industry. I work as a cook so I know definately if you wanna run a restaurant, and get in the average+ revenue bam, fucking mob or politician offering you a deal you can't reffuse. Fucking pathetic.. anywho, nuff rant n derailment, just gonna leave this here to connect back to mediocrity youtu.be/RLeQ7oxUAKcHades wrote:I couldn't agree more,0dd wrote:Unwillingness to progress is the acceptance of mediocrity. Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
The guy who wrote it has been penning these kinda long-winded/slightly bitter-old-dude vibe/oversimplified view of 'underground vs mainstream' posts for almost as long as I've been into dance music and AFAIK his own musical leanings are quite middle of the road house, I don't give him an excessive amount of my time.
This whole attitude of 'everyone's a DJ now', having a go at the people who're just into dance music because it's cool rather than for the true love of it, accusing them of ruining the scene/industry etc, has been around for a good couple of decades by this point. Obviously the advances in digital DJing, software etc in that time have lowered the barriers to entry and increased the amount of mediocre music and DJs for sure, but it's not exactly the recent phenomenon people make it out to be.
In reality I've never found it that difficult to just do your thing and remain optimistic towards all the quality music, DJs and events and so on that are still definitely out there despite the naysayers, rather than getting too wound up, life's too short. Most industries with any vague opportunities for fame and/or money have their fair share of fakes, just focus on the good shit and people! Every hour you spend ranting about the people not 'keeping it real' or how it's so fashionable these days might as well be spent on making music, meeting likeminded people, digging for music, you name it...

Typical Brenda post...
Re: Are amateurs ruining the dance music
i think the obsession with the idea that dance music is being ruined is what's ruining dance music... there is no intrinsic difference between it existing in different capacities
