how do you think techno will sound in the coming years?
I was having a quick read of RA and read this https://www.residentadvisor.net/news.as ... comments=2 about Rebekahs new album and listened to the preview track. the comments are usual for all comment sections on the internet, but these ones stood out:
all things go up and down, so it stands to reason (or at least the assumption is necessary for the question) there will be a new fashionable sound in techno and new artists who make good tracks which are inevitably emulated and a new sound is born. last year dance media (if you'll allow me to call it that) made a push at the Trancey-techno because it gave them an opportunity to talk about Nina Kraviz which is guaranteed to get decent traffic. will it continue this year?
question: if you had to choose one track that is in the style you would like to see dominate the clubs for the next few years, what would it be?
all music genres are such that now one track can be made and a thousand variants follow, so is there a track that exemplifies what you like about being in a techno club and for you is the high mark of the genre? a track that you'd not mind being the template for the future next few years?
oh boy, is this going to be the most cliché dark techno record 2018? 'black' in the title check, dark edgy monochrome artwork check, titles with vague references to technological advancement and political disorder check, distorted 909 kick and heaps of noise check, background drones check, distorted monosynth riff noodling check. if there is another contender it'll surely have to try!
"a resurgence in “proper” techno from Detroit and the elevation of Stingray and others should test the harder sound and it’s popularity as that’s clearly the next big thing" [double quoted for emphasis]Personally I like the harder edge techno that AnD, Rebekah and the like are currently putting out. I also think Rebekah does it as well, if not better than many others.
But I agree that the scene is becoming flooded. And I’m also tiring of the doom and gloom titles and vaguely dark edgy photography that goes with releases.
Still, a resurgence in “proper” techno from Detroit and the elevation of Stingray and others should test the harder sound and it’s popularity as that’s clearly the next big thing

Re: how do you think techno will sound in the coming years?
Yeah, I mean - that commenter isn't wrong. Without disrespecting those who are into that kind of 'noise techno' it sometimes (a lot of times) does feel a bit cheap.
Throw distortion on random elements, bash keyboard in rhythmic and regular patterns. This past year whenever 'that part of the night' comes in clubs I find myself completely switching off and losing interest. Often happens when DJs do a 'All night long' set there is the inevitable 1/2am "techno bit". If you thought club standard tech house was bad...
I'd like to see more 'party techno' come back. Jeff Mills with 15 909s, Jimmy Edgar and Vin Sol playing weird bendy riffs that make you laugh hysterically but move irresistibly. Shed as Head High playing euphoric riffs that make you punch the air. Hardwax just doing what Hardwax does.
I really just like partying right now.
Tbh, I'm at the point where if I didn't hear another track with a reverb bass ever again that would be fine. I'd like to welcome the return of basslines.

Re: how do you think techno will sound in the coming years?
What I like about being in a techno club is being surprised by the music and discover new stuff. So I would like it better if djs, live acts, promoters and labels tried to create their own things instead of looking at the hype of the moment or looking backward to the sounds of the "golden age". Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying none of them do but I feel that nowadays, the average techno dj will trust his ears less than beatport charts or who is currently trending in the music media. Thus placing a lot of "taste authority" in organizations that follow corporate interests more than a vision for music in the future.
I hope that the future will bring a lot of new and varied styles in techno instead of a few one, rinsed to death.

Re: how do you think techno will sound in the coming years?
I don't give a fuck what is fashionable in techno in the future as I have never given a fuck.
Fashionable techno is the shit that all sounds the same because it is fashionable.
It will probably be some regurgitation. We are already seeing the corpse of EBM being dragged up in techno land, so expect to see that for another year, then, who knows, early 90s new energy euro sound?
I'm only interested in artists who stay away from all that bollocks.

Re: how do you think techno will sound in the coming years?
I was actually the one made that first comment The preview track was ok, I didn't like it but there are hundreds of these tracks. What triggered me was the combination of the the stupid artwork and the stupid track titles with that sound.
The current state of mainstream dancefloor techno is awful. Almost everyone I talk to agrees, even the people that like the darker stuff. Almost everyone I know is going out less than 2-3 years ago, which is largely down to the music.
I would like to see more musicality, funk and genuine energy.

Re: how do you think techno will sound in the coming years?
IT`s not dark though, that`s the point, it`s generic tool shite with some distortion.
Adding ridiculous dark art and utterly laughable goth joke titles does nothing to disguise the utter banality of it.
Mainstream dancefloor poop it may as well be lisa lashes.
That`s the nub really, there is great house music and there is turgid commercial plop.
People assume that ALL techno is edgy and underground when it`s just as full of pop mentality.
I just avoid it, I`ll never hear it at the events I do go to anyway. Big fuck off idiot stampedes where the cattle are distracted by flashy lights and big bangs.

Oh, I agree that it's not really dark. Darkness needs to be carefully measured and has to have some weight behind it or it's meaningless.
Re: how do you think techno will sound in the coming years?
I don't get the "darkness" either. I mean, I never understood what dark music is anyway. Nothing sounds "dark" too me, however I understand happy and uplifting. And that shit kills my brain cells.

I've always thought this is pretty fucking dark... of course the Jim Jones sample is a bit of an obviously dark one but the heartbeat-esque bass and the strings do their job pretty well..

I get this example is a good one to convey the "darkness" of a musical piece.Lost to the Void wrote:Well, this is pretty fucking darkMattias wrote:I don't get the "darkness" either. I mean, I never understood what dark music is anyway.

But to me and how I would explain music (which I admit is a weak point of mine) it's not "dark" it's more the opposite of uplifting and more disencouraging, upsetting, unsettling.
I like it a lot.

God, that release is a fucking yawn fest... Cliche after cliche. Just lol at the title - 'My heart bleeds black'. Gimme a break hahah
Cant stand that sound of techno. I love trippy, hypnotic 'dark' techno, but this distorted, reverby droney shite is so boring.
I agree that there should be more funky techno coming out these days. You can still make something hypnotic and funky. Here is a great example:

That`s just semantics though, disencouraging, upsetting, unsettling, all can be considered appealing to the darker nature of man.Mattias wrote:I get this example is a good one to convey the "darkness" of a musical piece.Lost to the Void wrote:Well, this is pretty fucking darkMattias wrote:I don't get the "darkness" either. Calling something dark is merely an umbrella term for something dealing with these subjects.

I think that most techno loving veterans (who really love the genre for the music and not for the money) are hurt because of the fact that the 'genre' is getting (to) big and whored out nowadays.
I've heard that Charlotte De Witte is playing at the mainstage of TML 2018. Without commenting on Charlotte, it's just a fact that 'techno' is now programmed at the biggest stages together with fucking Cake Karaoke... . I don't think I need to say more... .
The big crowd is asking for more of that stuff so they will get it until the hype is over... .

There is always going to be shit at commercial level that lacks artistic merit. The upside is that there will be always be good music and real artistry in the scene, regardless if its not as commercialised at the mainstream stuff.WOLF! wrote:I think that most techno loving veterans (who really love the genre for the music and not for the money) are hurt because of the fact that the 'genre' is getting (to) big and whored out nowadays.

Well when you put it like that it makes more sense I reckon. I just always that I have had a hard time by defining something by that umbrella term you like to call it.Lost to the Void wrote:

Hence why I like to break it down.
Darkness / brightness is more of the tonal balance music have to me, not the musical "content" for my mind.

Yes that's the case. I discussed this with a friend over the weekend and my end conclusion was:RWise wrote: There is always going to be shit at commercial level that lacks artistic merit. 'The techno scene is like a circus; some very good artist's and lot's of clowns'.

Re: how do you think techno will sound in the coming years?
That's a wack ass track.
Since I don't go out anymore, or listen to podcasts, I have no idea what's being played in clubs or what's 'on trend'. I seriously doubt i'd stay on the dance-floor if some Porc or AnD or Ansome came on though.
