I think minimal techno as a genre just took over where microhouse came from. The 2 are interchangeable in my book although minimal was ultimately less interesting ..
This really.
Microhouse became minimal or MNML, and then influenced techno. IT was kinda cheesy and obvious.
Blip-de-Bloop.

Minimalist music however, is something completely different, and can be any genre.

And here's an example track to illustrate what kind of minimal I'm talking about (the "good" one).

That`s just techno, very classic sounding in fact, I wouldn`t call it minimal or minimalist.

Minimal techno is the stripped back raw sounds starting with Robert Hood and Plastikman (Plastikman is maybe not so raw, but it had few elements and was loopy and trippy and oh god what happened to .?!) if you ask me.

This...
It started off quite interesting.

You could probably call this track a "classic" and a good marker of the end of the Halcyon days of Microhouse and MNML.

It all got very predictable and cliche after this.

Even Whoretits early foray in to this with DE9:Closer to the Edit, was kinda awesome. He just lost his way in a sea of drugs, sake bars, vip bottle service, and DJing in trunks on a beach.

I still think it doesn't matter much in 2017... When was the last time someone organized a party where they actually advertised something like "Minimal techno party", 10 years ago?

Just play good techno (including minimal if you wish) and something else too, if you wanna get adventurous. I don't think it's a good idea to be a very specific genre DJ. Maybe if you're world famous and can capitalize on it, but if you're a local and relatively unknown, you probably wanna spread out a bit, play techno, house, disco, funk, hip hop etc. Assuming you like those of course. If you only play minimal techno getting gigs will be difficult, except maybe in Berlin.

Actually this is aimed at other techno djs not at the public, I often get asked what kind of techno I ike to play as it is important when setting the time table for example, and the best answer I found yet to this day is giving a track, which is not optimal, I think most of you missed my point here so let's just leave it that way

Play many kinds of techno? Not trying to be a smartass here, I just honestly think it's a good idea to have many kinds of weapons in your arsenal.

I do in fact play many kinds of techno(from atmospheric to acid going through birmingham and berlin), but try to keep a certain form of coherence and consistency, otherwise i'm just ruining it for the next djs, as we do full techno nights from 10pm to 5pm

In that case I'd still not use the word minimal much when marketing yourself, cos it's not so clearly defined, not en vogue atm and can mean many things, from old school Robert Hood tracks to mid 00's full on party anthems (VERY different from a Hood track), you probably have to explain it anyway, which kinda goes against what a simple genre name is useful for.

Similarly, I'm more of a house guy and really hate the use of the term deep house nowadays. It used to mean something like a record from Kerri Chandler, Moodymann, Larry Heard or Theo Parrish, nowadays it's something very different. I rarely use the term anymore myself.

Proper minimal techno IMO:

Mika Vainio (RIP, one of very few characters within the techno scene who was a real artist. Sorry to be snobbish about that)
Wolfgang Voigt/Mike Ink at his Studio 1 days (obviously)
Daniel Bell/DBX (infused minimal sensibility with a housey funk without getting silly)
Robert Hood (pre 1998, Minimal Nation is THE minimal techno album. Nothing comes close in sheer rawness. The antidote to overproduced sentimental Plastikman stuff)
Thomas Brinkmann (the most underrated techno artist ever)
Kotai/Mo/EMD (ruled the 90s 'arty' techno underground in Berlin outside of the standard rave scene)

There's one off projects here and there, but that's more or less it. The 00's minimal techno was alright, but that's was mostly tech-house, really.

Minimalist music is exploring the space where you don't know whether what you hear is boring og completely encapsulating the essence of something profound. Or maybe the sensation where the musical experience becomes something other than derived from basic "human" sentiment, although that of course is impossible in principle. So yeah, some of it walks a fine line of being the emperor's new clothes, but if you don't go there what's the point.

Well there seems to be a misunderstanding in this thread : I was not talking about minimal as a genre or as some would call it "mnml" but as an adjective and as a way to approach music. I have probably expressed myself in a wrong way. MNML as a genre is some plas tikman / vilallobos stuf etc..which is definitely not the genre I'd listen to.
Anyways, now that I think of it, it's more the repetitiveness that I was referring to than minimalism. here is an example that describes perfectly what i'm talking about.

I think the man is just saying he didn't exactly feel like he was waiting for some kind of permission,
he was more making his statement as a sort of open question to start a discussion.

Heh. OP, asked you if you were talking about "minimal" as a genre. You said "yes".

At this point I have no idea what you're asking.

What do you want to know? Is minimal techno minimal and is it cool too like it/not like it?

Sometimes techno is very minimal, sometimes it's less minimal. You're allowed to like it regardless.

Have I answered whatever the question was?

Maybe if people took the time to correctly read instead of just throwing answers that are not related to the original post...
