Who's making their own videos?

Post by msl »

So was wondering who else is making videos for their tracks, maybe we can post our tricks and progress. Lots of cool resources online. I was lucky to do a free 2 day video editing course through my job recently, so I've been playing around. I'd made a few very simple videos in the past with iMovie, usually just things I filmed with my iPhone then slowed down to match the song length, which usually worked quite well actually. Anyways heres a new video I made in Premiere with filters and some edits, nothing fancy, just some footage of the L train in Philly that I used to ride when I lived there as kid.

Been doing it for a long time now (since 2009) for my label. Actually was doing it for techno promotion before everyone in techno started doing it, so it was more special then, now it doesn't quite feel worth the effort as everyone is on it and it takes aaaaaaaages to do and Techno YouTube links aren't a unique thing now :( . But I am basically relaunching the label purely as a way to promote artists I like, and most people seem to like having a video done for their own releases so.....

These are mostly the ones from my label with a few assorted. I've done some bits for other labels too here and there.
I use lightworks, it's awesome.

Generative art has interested me for a while and it's something I'm keen to learn (bought a book and everything). never finished a track to create a video for but I'm in to the whole audio/visual thing.

This sort off thing is pretty cool

I did video production decades ago at college and then never did anything with it since. Started making videos again just to bring a bit something extra to the tracks but won't deny I'm also doing it to expand the reach. Kind of enjoy it, but they take ages and a third of the way in I always regret it once the RSI gets bad.

Use Sony Vegas Pro and these are all stock/found footage, the Carpetbaggers track I prepared a lot of stills on Photoshop too. The next one I've got a more specific idea and will be digging out the Go Pro.

I bought a little video camera this year and been slowly learning video editing. Haven't made any music videos for techno though.

I wish I could afford Adobe Premier + After Effects. I use some free editors but they're pretty bad, even for free (compared to, say, free VST's).

Next thing is to get a proper green screen and the lighting for it. So much fun to be had there...

Fuck Adobe and their rip off subscription. Get Blackmagic Davinci Resolve for editing and color correction and Fusion for effects and graphics. They are both free and are amazing.

Curious as to any feedback on a video project for a release last year:

https://vimeo.com/189901050

I'm gonna watch all the videos in here too. Also I'm sure everyone is familiar with the29nov films but they seem to own it in techno video production.

So what I'm really curious about is what everyone's thoughts are on the actual meaning to adding videos to techno music. Is it just about getting on YouTube or vimeo and not just having a still image background? Or is it more?

I watched and listened to this before i went to work this morning.
Love both the track and vid. The music has the right kind of groove for me.

I think in a lot of cases, videos make the music more interesting. Even better to listen to.

I'll check those out! I've been trying like at least 5 freeware video editors but they all seem either very buggy (crash every 5 minutes kind of buggy) or very bad in other ways.

@quest; I guess it's a way to reinforce or compliment the aesthetic that you are trying to achieve with your music, similar to developing artwork for an ep or album ..

Hope they work well for you, Fusion can be a bitch to run on some graphic cards but Resolve is usually stable from what I've seen.

Lighworks is free, used by the pros (lots of films done on lighworks such as wolf of wall street) intuitive, easy to learn.

Hmm, I have Lightworks actually, but I wouldn't call it easy... one of the most difficult to learn pieces of software I've ever used, come to think of it. Some VERY strange design choices in it, making it very counter-intuative for someone who usually doesn't even need to read manuals for Windows programs, cos everything is visible in menus and toolbars.

Davinci Resolve is the color corrector for Hollywood that has evolved into a quite nice editing program as well. If you have good quality source videos you can do amazing things with it.

Fusion has more of a learning curve but you can do mind boggling stuff, the latter part of this video a guy creates a 3d scene from a 2d picture of New York...

I watched the tutorial video once and was up and running with lightworks, at speed, within 20 mins.
Super super easy to use.

What kinda stuff do you do? I usually have like 2-3 layers of video, green screening, effects, separate audio track etc... the user interface gets quite difficult the second you do something else than just cut up a video.
