Eating Healty

Post by Alume »

Hey guys,

I know this isnt your ordinary techno or music topic but health is something that has been in my head for a while and I still cant master it perfectly. I guess we are all pretty hard on our bodies on this forum, whit all the drugs, fame, parties and bitches.

I left my parents house for almost 3 years now and though I can say that I know how to take care of myself I want to take it to a higher level, I want to take the whole "your body is a temple thing seriously".

After a few hard lessons I think I am finally at a stage that I know when to stop drug binges and sleepless nights before my body tells me to go fuck myself. I also started sport recently, swimming and got back on my bmx bike as well.

So basically I'd love some advice on where to start, what should I look out for on packages? And all those kind of questions. I vaguely know what calories are and to be honest when I look at a package I dont know what to look for and what is bad and what is not.

I have to confess, I havent checked the interweb yet, I'm going to do that after this post. But I thought because it is a matter that we all struggle with why not post it?

I dont follow my own advice, but basically, have a varied diet, plenty of veg, avoid obvious bad things (sweets, sweet drinks, too much deep fried stuff), aim to never be full - so dont make your portions too big, and you'll be doing good.

If you look further, advice changes all the time.

Yeah the obvious ones I dont do, purely because I dont have the money or I dont like the tast.

I mean I dont eat sweats, I dont drinks soda's, I do eat deep fries shit once a while but thats because I drink to much and become a man in need of that kind of stuff haha.

I dont know, its a riddle to me. I not fat or anything, so I dont need to lose weight, I did grow a beer belly but hey fuck that.

if it is in a package, don't eat it.

as the netherlands are in EU it might have food labelling the same as the UK so it should give you the %'s of your daily intake the products are providing if you are going to eat packaged or processed foods.
eat green vegetables every day, as much as you want, eat at most a fist sized portion of potato or rice as your carbs. cut down on pasta and bread of you can't avoid it completely.

when you eat meat eat mostly meat with no fat or fish. eat 2 eggs a day. eat fruit. don't drink calories (i.e. no sodas) except tea, coffee (minimal calories) and milk. theres about 180 calories in a beer, you need around 2200-2500 calories a day depending on your height. theres 7000 calories in a kilo(as your dutch) of fat. if you want to get drunk, vodka is best. in general if you eat too much you'll gain weight, if you don't eat enough you'll lose it. it's easy to do, it can be boring if you're not a good cook. most people get fat because they are inactive and have poor willpower and so eat too much.

when you are eating, don't do anything else like watch TV or surf the internet. focus on eating and your body will be more satiated. if you eat and watch tv, your body is distracted and so will become hungry quicker as it doesn't know it's eaten.

eat less healthy food if you want, the odd big mac won't make a difference once in a while, it's the regular bad eating that causes problems.

swimming is great exercise, good going for doing that.

Don't avoid natural fats: nothing sets you up better for exercise than a fattier meal. The body prioritises fat metabolism over carbohydrates: the calorific content is c. 3x that of carbs (weight for weight) and it's readily converted to energy. If you must munch through the small hours go the fruit and nut route - leave the Haribo on the supermarket shelves - sugar is poison, end of. Cholesterol is a crucial component of mammalian cell membranes; without it we cannot exist. Excessive cholesterol is only dangerous to those w/ sedentary lifestyles - in active individuals it is burnt as fuel.

Ignore notions that eating large meals late in the evening equates to weight gain - this has been proven to be false, look instead to the calorific intake over the whole day, and adjust accordingly.

Eating healthily may improve one's skin tone, lessen the chance of developing of bowel cancer early in one's life - but it will not prolong your life across the board, it's a small part of a very big picture. Eating certified organic produce combined w/ a sedentary lifestyle will fuck you up in the end.

I recall a comment from a doctor retelling a meeting w/ a patient:

Patient: I don't understand! I eat 100% organic and I still put on weight ...
Doctor: Madam, try putting a little less in your mouth.

This, basically. Try to make your lifestyle changes balanced and sustainable, if you hate your new diet you won't keep it up and therefore it's pointless over the medium/long term. You can still indulge from time to time and if you're getting enough exercise and generally eat OK the majority of the time you'll be fine for it. The more exercise, the more you need to refuel as well; if you're happy with your weight you basically need to balance calories in with calories out.

My diet isn't too bad. I don't eat sweets, or chocolate. Crisps and biscuits very rarely. I don't cook with salt and don't eat margarine / butter. That's pretty much been my diet since 15/16 when I used to play football at a very high level.

I only eat at meal times. So that's breakfast, lunch and dinner (no snacking). I do eat a fair amount, but then my metabolism is very fast. I need to eat rice as a staple of my diet since my body breaks down everything else so quickly.
I don't drink tea or coffee so that's no caffeine which does mean getting calcium is a bit of an issue. So I've recently starting eating cereal again after 15 years. I usually eat with low-fat yogurt, or sometimes I'll have a cheese roll.

Exercise wise since my second kid it's been a bit difficult. This is the longest I've gone not playing football weekly in about 20 years (11 months not playing). We have a treadmill at home. I've done x2 5k runs on it in the last month, but really I'd like to do that once a week. I run it in under 30mins, so it's a decent pace. I actually hate gym work it's boring, even the 5k runs are boring. I prefer doing team sports. I probably run 6-7k during the course of a football match.

Not sure if I'll end up going back to playing football, it's just chaos at the moment when I get home the work.

Just ordered a rice cooker for work, since we don't have a microwave. I prefer to make my own lunches, and I'm not really a fan of sandwiches. This way I can make vietnamese style food at work (cold meat and veg with hot rice).

Interesting topic alume, funny you posted about this as it is something I though about doing myself but I just didn't get around to it.

I've made a few changes myself in the last year. I bought myself a road bike and started cycling, I rude approx 50 - 100 miles a week at the moment the main reason was because I was putting on weight and wasn't happy about it. I started to eat healthier as well and I've lost just short I a stone.

I've never had a good diet and always eaten rubbish food and I haven't given up on bad food altogether I have just made a few changes here and there.

I've cut out white bread completely and everything is wholemeal (pittas bread and wraps)
For breakfast I eat natural yogurt and granola with sunflower seeds and blueberry (these are good for the brain apparently)

I eat seeds, nuts and dried fruit and hard boiled eggs as snack food through the day and in the evenings I eat more fish, chicken and salads. I've also cut out chips.

Don't get me wrong I still eat fast food from time to time but only as a treat and not every day. Having cycled approx 1700 miles has helped a lot as well haha

Get outside, Ashley, running on treadmills is soul destroying. All you need is a decent mix (DnB works best) and motivation. I tend to run home from work 2 or 3 times a week, I can vary the route to make it between 5km and 10km and because it's a journey I do anyway it's not hard to fit in time wise. It's great for the football as well, I play once a week (to a very average standard) and when I'm doing a lot of pace work for an upcoming race I'll be playing better as I've got so much energy. That and a couple of light weight sessions at the gym at lunch times and I don't really have to bother with monitoring what I eat.

Getting outside is such a nice thing, I really like the air and the scenery and the peace and quiet lol. The great thing about getting out for a ride (or a run I suppose) is that you have earned the right to eat like a king when you get home. I usually have a few beers in the evening after a weekend ride, maybe a cheeky spliff as well.

I hate road running. Its hard to describe. But I've played football since I was 10 training as part of a group or playing matches is what I'm used too. I like the competitive part of it. I'm hate losing. In any team I've played in I've always been the captain and in the top 3 fittest players.

I don't mind the treadmill. I open the garden door so I have a nice breeze coming in. I have the DnB playing from the living room next door. So its not as bad as it seems. Really I just need to find another football team
When you play a sport you have both the mental and physical exertion. With running it just bores me, not even music can overcome that. I'm used to making decisions. Do this, do that etc...

I know what you mean. I started after breaking my collar bone in a freak 7 a side accident about 5 years ago. I got it plated and told not to play for 3 months and that was extended to nearly a year as it didn't seem to be healing properly (it had, just had a line where it had fused). Running was something I did out of physical boredom until I got the all clear- I wouldn't have entertained the thought before.

I've kept it up ever since and I find it very zen when I'm doing it for fun (races, not so much) and it's about the only way I get to properly listen to mixes now. Sometimes my mind just wanders and I'll have no idea where 20 minutes went. It's weirdly relaxing, but I find football weirdly relaxing as well as it's the only thing you think about for an hour, not the daily grind.

If you were closer I'd love to get you to one of our games. Everyone loves a random ringer who's miles better than everyone else ;).
