Are there any other decent sites similar to Resident Advisor?

Post by Barfunkel »

I mean, a site that has techno, house etc music reviews, articles about production, DJ'ing, club culture etc.

RA is a decent read IMO. That said, I don't know any other sites like that, hence the topic. There might be better sites for random club life and club music related gossip, but I wouldn't know about that. I like reading about subjects that interest me and I'd like to reach out a bit.

Isn't Reddit a message board? I'm not necessarily looking for such, though I'm not completely opposing the idea. I did read Reddit a month ago a bit but it didn't seem that informative, more like random spamming and stuff.

A total solution? Don't know if there is one... Musicradar is nice, for reviews you can check out Mixmag.

Perhaps these can get you on your way.

I read Fact Mag quite a lot it doesn't seem as corporate as MixMag or as self aware as Resident Advisor

Yeah, RA lost its momentum when they closed the comment section.

Here are some other sites of interest perhaps:

https://mnmt.no/

https://5mag.net/

https://groove.de/

https://www.xlr8r.com/

http://en.traxmag.com/

https://www.attackmagazine.com/

https://mixmag.net/

https://www.zweikommasieben.ch/ (also in print!!!)

I am not particular impressed by any of these, though it's a pretty dire landscape really.

There are several subreddits, but people are mostly posting YT links, not really interesting.

Still some reasonable blogs and boards here and there, otherwise most discussion is on twitter/FB/instagram now which is too bad.

After this site Reddit is my second go to place for techno production. Check out r/technoproduction. The moderators there keep the spam under control.

There used to be some good blogs around a decade but now there's pretty much nothing except RA that features half-decent writing (and even RA often isn't great. A lot of their single reviews are literally just one or two pagraphs that say absolutely nothing about the music, like wtf). Sites / mags like The Quietus and The Wire are still good but they're not that focussed on electronic music these days.

Bizarre name for a techno mag based in Berlin (Motz is the name of a newspaper sold by the homeless in the U-Bahn, "Guten Tag, ich verkaufe die aktuelle Motz" is a sentence that anyone that uses public transportation here has heard a billion times).

btw I'm still planning on doing a blog where I spam people with 20-page essays on the dialectics of Basic Channel and shit. I have lots of half-started drafts, just need to find the time to finish some texts and to set the whole thing up.

Full support Mr dubdub!!

If you guys are into some more academic writing, there is Dancecult https://dj.dancecult.net/

(even though I have not been impressed by their latest issues... specifically that they devoted an entire issue to live coding  )

Sometimes there are some really great articles, though.

Interesting, never heard of that journal. From a quick look at the contents, it seems to echo my main problem with most academic writing on dance music: It ultimately renders everything through the lense of sociology and refuses to ever engage the music immanent and as-it-is. I think this is part of an underlying, perhaps often unconscious, bias that refuses to view dance music music as art and only regards it as having any value through it's social dimension - the music is only an excuse to talk about the social phenomena associated with dance music.

Totally agree - although it is shifting in the last decade or so (especially Kode9's book about sonic warfare made a huge impact that has made a significant turn toward investigating the aesthetics of club music).

It is not that the sociologic perspective isn't interesting, but I find it much more fulfilling to talk about music's place in society if we start out by understanding the underlying logic of the music itself. My own master's thesis was actually about analyzing a logic in techno and then turning towards the cultural context in that order.

Good links here, thanks! Got tired of RA recently since they became so political and deleted their comments section. It seemed they should have gone in the opposite direction and added the forums back or some form of interactivity. They didn't like some of the nasty things people were writing, but they threw the baby out with the bath water... Dancecult looks interesting
