it must be kinda hard to teach someone how to sound like someone else if the person doing the teaching is not the same person they're teaching the student to sound like.

edit:
i think i broke something.

I think most sites are there just to give you the tools to get you started. A particular site that I am a member of did just that. 3 years ago I knew absolutly nothing about music production. Know I know very little but I'm making tracks lol

i've had a few good looks around the internet over the years and it seems like there certainly are some good learning resources out there. really tho i have no idea how good and i've convinced myself that it comes down to working really hard and practicing a lot. like basically anything else that requires any level of skill.

i really like some of the things you find on youtube just to see how other people work. not really to copy them, but i find it quite fascinating sometimes watching people use familiar software in unfamiliar ways.

i would really like to know someone in real life that successfully produces the same things i want to so i could learn directly from them and copy all their good bits :-)

i've been so close to going to SAE or our local MAINZ schools a few times but reading the course descriptions eventually always brings me back down. it seems if i do go i'm going to be covering a lot of ground i'm already covering on my own but i'm going to be paying upwards of 8 grand for the pleasure.

I dont want to copy anyone but I do want to know the techniques or basics so I can do my own thing. Everyone has a special way of doing stuff at the end of the day. Your brain distorts what you learn anyway so even if you did get a glimpse of whatever, you would come away and put your own slant on it. If you dont do that & just copy copy copy / regurgitate regurgitate regurgitate.

Know you were joking Sam and thats not aimed at you man. But seriously think about it: how do people sleep at night wanting to make music by numbers? I want to see techniques on youtube etc and not making tracks. I'll make my own thank you very much hhehehe

yeah exactly. it's similar to using loops or construction kits to make or carry the whole track. fair play to anyone that gets fun out of it, but it's totally not for me because i think the challenge is completely different.

I'm thinking about doing a subscription or a short course to a couple of sites at the moment. I want to learn more and its also a bit of boredom as well tbh. I'm a bit of a geek if I tell the truth haha.

I think anyone would get more out of a course like pointblank or quantize courses which is shorter and more focused. gives you the low down and sends you out the door on your way. Those sites where you pay a subscription for new content, i think its a never ending process. Get in. Get a different perspective. Get out. Do your own thing.

I use youtube every now and then to see how other people use things like Maschine or ableton. Besides that, i am way to lazy to read, and i don't have the patience to read a lot either :P

Well here`s my take.
A number of years ago I wanted to bone up on my ableton skills, as even though I have been using it since 2003 I wanted to makie sure I was doing things "properly" with it as I wanted to get my ableton certification.
I also wanted to see how ableton courses were being run as I was starting to teach.

I ended up after much checking about taking a course on ableton at Point Blank.

Now the course was structured really well, and even though I have been producing for years, and thought I knew ableton, I still picked up some good tricks.
The main thing was that the classes were small and you got one to one feedback with your class tutor, via video. So they would check out your stuff and give you a recorded video, feeding back on your stuff on ableton.

This one to one feedback is invaluable.

So yes, I think you can learn a lot on websites, but there is nothing like working with someone.

As a plug, I do one-to-one production classes (I think one of the members of this very forum came to my studio for a session), from beginner to advanced.
I also do guest lectures and workshops.

If anyone is going to Exit festival in Serbia this year, the preceding sibling festival called Share Festival, which is about knowledge sharing related to music tech, I might be there running intensive production workshops, and doing some lectures on mastering philosophy, production and live performance.

Jeah i don't know actually... I learned a lot from tutorials. You just have to know that function is there. Sometimes you drop in something new like an effect or such. but then you can't understand how to use it properly. Maybe then those tutorials can be helpfull if you search for those specific effects, or sounds in google.

Is the answer some? You can learn some stuff from a music production website, but there is a limit.

I've learned some stuff, I feel that there is scope to teach me more but maybe not. :D
