Soundcloud "following"
Soundcloud "following"
Whats the point in following someone on soundcloud - if you dont have any public tracks (talking about my own a/c here).
AND they are a different genre than you?
AND they dont know you?
I think its a bit sad. What are they hoping to get out of following me? Its myspace all over again.

They are probably hoping you'll follow the back. I have plenty that stop following me if I don't return the favour lol

Re: Soundcloud "following"
im a bit new to sc so i get a bit excited every time someone starts following.
im not a total tart and wont necessarily follow back if i don't recognize or know them from somewhere
it seems like some people make sc a full time occupation.

Re: Soundcloud "following"
I've just started noticing this and I've been through and pruned my follow list. There were quite a few randoms that I've followed back, then a few weeks later you look and they've dumped you and everyone else and only follow like 2 people or a handful of really famous ones.
I've been leaving polite messages explaining why I no longer wish to witness their rise to glory and that I've muted them.
My SC bubble has been well and truly burst, damn users

Re: Soundcloud "following"
Sad to see if Soundcloud goes down the same route as Myspace etc. The more hyped and well-known it becomes (10million users woo...) the more crappy stuff like the above mentioned we get.
I'm lucky to started kinda early on with Soundcloud and got a steady base of proper followers & not that many who follow / drop.

Re: Soundcloud "following"
This is bang on mate! And what you say about a black list, I was thinking the same idea for labels. I'll speak to the guys and maybe we could do sometging here!zesto wrote:I have logged every single discrepancy in a damning blacklist, some people have followed me multiple times in a couple of days without even playing one track, you know that these people are just fame hunters.
Whenever you get a new follower, check how many people they are following, max is 2000 on sc so if its up near there you know they are fishing for followers, most of these dicks will fill up their followers to 2000 just to get more through courtesy and then remove all the 2000 they followed, I have watched many people do this trick.
I only follow people who have actually given me input about my music or people I have met in the wild. If anybody would like to jump on board and add to the blacklist perhaps we could publish it somewhere in the future, name, shame and teach these fame hungry bastards a lesson.

Re: Soundcloud "following"
Well I have about 20 new followers a day and i cant be arsed to check - and i only follow people I like no point following just anyone
As for the blacklisting thing - I've already discussed with the other two and do not think its a good idea as we dont want Subsekt to be a negative forum unlike some others I wont mention

Re: Soundcloud "following"
The whole social networking thing is interesting isnt it? Its so fkn fake really.
We've got a subsekt a/c on twitter.. and we've managed to get the site retweeted to around 70,000 people.
Guess how many new members we've got? about 3 or 4 - lol. Which further proves the point that the amount of people that pin their badge to you, does not mean its an active relationship.
I get Guitar shops in the US following me on youtube. WHY?! If the reality of geography is not a force strong enough to prevent people from making silly decisions.. then are we surprised that people are nutters lol
"Friends" or following - whatever it is, FB, SC, TW or whatever.. its all about appearances for the most part. People want to be associated with whoever they identify with.
But of course there are the people who have a cunning & confusing plan.. for fcuk knows what reason haha. I'm sure there is sociological research about social networking / groups / behaviour etc.. and it'll back up all the common sense that we have come up with here.

Re: Soundcloud "following"
i think part of it is that you can share a track with people you follow, which means you get plays from heads that just play their incoming tracks. it's superficial in a way but i suppose, technically, it is a way to get heard (and get muted sharpish) ..
Re: Soundcloud "following"
i dont really pay attention to soundcloud that much anymore at all
i use it as a platform to upload my own tracks to post on facebook.
i have about 1400 followers and any new track gets about 100 plays tops.
i dont play "private" tracks that are sent to 1500 other people unless its from someone i wd listen to anyway.
i dont bother to send private tracks to 1500 people.
i dont really bother adding my tracks to groups and i dont go into the groups that im in.
basically i no longer use it as a form of social network the way i did at the start, merely as a player widget.
i dont bother with the spam groups on facebook of all the different "techno this that & the other"
all notifications are switched off. (i do occasionally stick the odd bit of spam in ones i can remember the name of but its very half hearted)
and i very rarely browse those groups and play random tracks from other spammers.
theres a closed group on facebook that i use made up of local guys from northern ireland caled Producer NI
consisting entirely of people living in or from NI who are actively producing (and a few of the lads who promote/dj at local nights and support local producers)
im still in the "birmingham" group on FB cos I know a few of yous lads but i dont post my stuff in there anymore it doesnt fit the bill.
phew!

Re: Soundcloud "following"
I knew you are a bit sour anyway Dwyer - but after reading that.. FFS
lol
Ah yeah.. its all spam man. No-one stops to chat. Makes me sick.
I do love forums though tbh.. and I've made some very good friends over the years on the net. Forums have been the thing that I've used more than any other form of social whatever.
I dont know why people think that having access is the same as making an effort.
Its only fake if thats what you choose.
Just got this quick definition of "networking"
lol

Maybe thats why people become jaded with it, as there is an expectation of community that never realises. The sites themselves aren't driven by quality of interactions.. they run a business & want people to use them in high volume. Expectation & reality are clash from the outset.net·work·ing

noun
1.
a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest: Working mothers in the community use networking to help themselves manage successfully.

Re: Soundcloud "following"
funny you say that.
soundcloud used to have a forum.
it was never well 'managed' and in the end it got spammed real bad and was pulled down.
They actually had a poll on whether or not to keep it open (whether this was a serious question is another point) but the end result is it ceases to exist...
and guess what, most posts start with "check out my new tune!"
but there was potential there if it was moderated well.
guess they saw it as more hassle than it was worth ..

Re: Soundcloud "following"
It's definately better to know a few people and actually interact with them. I think they are more likely to talk about you to others if it's done that way.
The Birmingham/industrial Facebook page is becoming more and more spammy the last few weeks. I actually deleted some posts today that we're from people who don't interact with others. On the flipside I've meet several people through the group and talk music with them on a regular basis. Even met some in person

Re: Soundcloud "following"
i quite like that facebook group. it's the only one i'm in at the moment and a main reason i created an fb account. i generally like pretty low level and no pressure communication over the internet so it suits me. i play quite a few tracks people post knowing that someone somewhere else in the world is listening or has just listened to it and got the techno buzz from it.
and i like following people on soundcloud too. i'm interested in what people make and how their sound develops. but there has to be limits because i could spend all day and night hunting down music and i know a lot would be amazing, but just the act of consuming it would be a full time job.
limiting myself to the people i follow and who follow me is a good way to stay focussed.
bigger names are easily accessible through sc, bandcamp, and youtube, and i regularly do the rounds there to see what they're up to.
i think i've gone off topic. what are we talking about again?
