I've finished like 2 tracks the last 3 or so years

And naturally made hundreds of new ideas. Most of them trash of course, but I just narrowed down them to a playlist of 29 that are good enough to finish and release. Some almost complete, some made in an hour demos with a decent enough idea. Some quite old.

I used to be able to finish like 70% of the tracks I started, but that was a few years ago.

Any tips on the subject (practical or philosophical)? How to finish a large amount of tracks I mean. It's such a massive project.

totally in the same boat...

I'd say, take a released track you like roughly in the same style/feel, lay out its structure in your DAW and somehow copy that with your own elements.
Hear where the one shots, fx,... sit.
A classic, but works...

If I feel a rack has at least a little bit of potential I just finish it. It might take some effort and is not always fun but it’s worth it in the end.

At least the arrangement should be done, and the mix as close to good as possible. You can always go back to a batch of tracks and mix those again - upside is also that they may sound a bit more coherent then

I would always encourage people to force things a little bit, you know, perseverance. But at the same you have to be a bit ruthless and know when to stop flogging an idea that isn't getting completed, and delete them. If you've got millions of great loops that are to good to through away, put them into folders of 10 and just concentrate on one folder at a time, be ruthless with the folder too.

Sometimes a loop was just meant to be a loop.

Try throwing stuff down in the arrangement page , delete bits out see what works etc. you've just got to find the mojo again that is all.

^ great advice in the posts above, I'm someone who has really struggled to finish stuff in the past.

To elaborate on this what do you think holds you back from finishing these tracks, is it perfectionism?

For me I just knew I was gonna make a mess out of a great idea, and I often did, and still do... but i think that is something all producers do weather they admit it or not.

To help me get past this in the past I write tracks for the bin, just for the sake of going through the process of starting and finishing a track, I think I heave learnt something from every track I have finished.

I'd say pick a few of those ideas you think have some potential and finish them, that should get ya on ya way.

I think it's because I've become a better producer the last few years but at the same time the bar I've set for myself is a lot higher as well. I demand too much from myself. It's simply impossible for every track to be the best track I've ever made.
