Adios Daft Punk
Don't know how relevant they have been to anyone here in about 20 years, but their first album and tracks were astonishing.
I clearly remember being in Wobble in Birmingham in 96 and hearing Da Funk. I was 17 and it was the first tune that people went nuts to. The crowd stomped their feet and whistled, the whole club shook. It was such a great moment. The sound was so fresh.
Also went to see them at the Que Club in (May?) 97, when they still had their normal heads on. As an 18-year-old, that was a fucking experience.
Listened to 'Get Lucky' in the car, what a piece of crap tune that was, driving home from work to pick up the kids, take one to football, pick up some shopping, living the dream, but I guess I wasn't 17 anymore, having the time of my life in a sweaty nightclub.
I suppose, at least they remained revelant and expanded beyond their base, not still appealing to middle-aged men driving skodas on the way home from work.. Ending up being the 90's version of the Rolling stones or Led Zepplin, or any Massive Rock Band, being championed by boomers who you hate.

Oh yeah, forgot... One more time was a great track, especially on the beans.

Homework was a legendary release. It's a great album.
They progressively got more and more pop and commercial as time went on.
But Homework era they were bad ass.
That they have disbanded now... I can't say it has any relevance to me..

Was never really a fan. All the stoners got into homework when the local rave club started really kicking off. Wasn't my cup of tea.
Later on, heard a lot of French house records , either side or solo projects / or by peers.. that roule stuff, braxe, bangalter, Roy Davis Jr. Liked that jackin rawness better. Irreversible soundtrack was cool.. featured some of the earlier roule releases.
I'm sure there's other early stuff I'd love that I ain't heard.

There's a couple of nicely brutal tracks on homework but beyond that I've never found them that interesting.

They were very formative for me - coming from a small-ish town, where we ended up not being able to buy any CDs besides the top 50 best sellers*, they were for a long time my biggest exposure to 'proper' electronic music (along with Prodigy and Chemical Brothers).
I really like both homework and discovery - but they are aesthetically extremely different to a point, where I hardly think it makes sense to compare them. Discovery is a sort of classic rock album made with the tools of house production, whereas Homework seems designed for the dance floor.
*I guess I was the last of a generation that relied on the distribution of music for exposure.

Im glad they have given up. Its about time haha. Homework was the soundtrack to 97. All my mates were into that album. Equally their essential mix from that time time was epic but as soon as they ditched any of the rawness from thier sound I lost interest. They must of made a fuck ton of money though.
The same can be said for the chemical brothers.

I didn't realise that they also won Grammys and stuff. Whether or not you agree on the whole awards thing, it's a high accolade.
And yes, they made a FUCK TON of cash. 70 million each.
Homework and some bits of Discovery are great albums.

Aye.. Big respect.
They were definitely a gateway to other tangents for a lot of people.

Re: Adios Daft Punk
I don`t think they are important at all to the history of Techno.
But to dance music as a whole, they certainly were. Popular and helped take dance music to the masses, along with other acts.
Actually, I`m starting to rethink their importance now. They got so big and so commercial they probably contributed to the birth of EDM in some way, and the beginning of the gentrification of dance music.
So no.. I`ve changed my mind now.
Fuck Daft Punk. Good riddance.
Re: Adios Daft Punk
I like that they started with the diy distro route and homework was a welcome counter to the shite trance that was everywhere at the time, like Tiesto and Van Dyke.
The releases after that were pure lame, sprinkled with fairy dust. They lost that funk somewhere along the line...
I remember seeing a video of Thomas djing at a house party or something in NY back when they started and the place was fuckin' hopping! All french house kinda vibes ..

Should it not be "Au Revoir"?

I went to see Electroma at the Rotterdam Film Festival when it premiered.
Still remember it. So many people walked out. Literally walking out with a pissed look on their faces.
Best work they ever did.
