Now you mention it, it does have a strange burnt kind of smell to it. Kind of like it has been smoked (the kind of smoking you'd do to fish or bacon). It's difficult to place but really quite odd. This synth definitely has some history.

Have you opened it up and had a look? Sounds like an electrical fault or something, could explain it's 'issues'.

well, you said it came with the wrong power supply... you needn't look any further, I think. Had the same thing with a Sherman filterbank. Luckily the creator doesn't live too far from my place, and for a very modest fee, I spent an afternoon in his chaotic shed where he builds and tests his stuff, played with some of his prototypes, got a new power supply, a repair and a handful of mods to the unit.
It was a Dreadbox, wasn't it? Maybe they can set you up with a part quite easily if you're good with electronics.

That being said, Karma is a bitch, and I'd go with the simple 'please advice' mail first.

I did think about opening it up and having a go at a repair when it came back to me but I haven't tried to solder anything since I was at school and I was pretty shit at it. I have been thinking about a little DIY project but I think this would be too big for me. I recently found an ancient and knackered Ibanez sonic distortion pedal from when I was a kid so repairing that may be more my level.

Would a lower rated psu damage the synth? The psu that came with it was 12v instead of 15v. I only checked the psu when I checked the tuning and found that if was several tones flat. I swapped it out for a 15v psu and this resolved that issue.
