Ear Training

Post by Lynx »

Came across a new ear training site that might be worth checking out for the less advanced of us here.

Soundgym.co

It's definitely a bit childish in design and piggy-backs off the 'gamification' craze which I'm not particularly a big fan of, but I can see it having some use.

I signed up for it last night to get full access and give it a good test drive. Some of the games I find easy and a bit useless (such as being able to tell a change in volume), but others, such as telling which drum loop is compressed more, I'm finding challenging (which is a good sign that my ears can be better there).

Anyways, I'm not sure how well it scales with your increase in ability but I'm finding some value in it for right now.

Did you get the subscription or just doing what you can with the free account? How do you like it so far?
I actually like the "gamification" aspect...

Bought the full subscription to see the entire catalog of games and give it a proper chance over the course of a month.

I'll have more insight after this month (I'll be doing the games an hour every day).

So far, it seems alright. Well worth $11. If anything it's helped me identify the aspects of audio that I'm weaker with (turns out to be compression most noticeably).

Some of the games I find a bit easy so I'll be interested to see how well the difficulty scales along with improved ability.

If you like the "game" aspect, go for it mate. It does it fairly well awarding you 'coins' to buy gear for your virtual studio, comparing you against everyone else on the site, etc. Just not my cup of tea

I'm a bit busy this month but maybe next month. I wanted to do some kind of ear training for a while already.
Please let us know how it progresses! :)

30 minutes is 30 minutes mate and surely that 30 minutes adds up over time.

I know I spend more than 30 minutes wanking every day...

Alas, I'll keep you posted.

Here's another program that's free if money's an issue - http://www.v-plugs.com/mr_soundman

This is very good, ear training is very important to my job and this seems very effective.
Gain recognition was super easy, as was panning, love the frequency picker, not easy once you get to the 1k+ range.

Signed up for this.

Agreed on all accounts.

I'd love to see a bit more complexity to the games such as attack/release/ratio settings for compressor, etc.

Good enough for now

that would be difficult, all compressors are different. 5ms attack on one compressor is not the same as 5ms attack on another.

I was unaware that the characteristics between compressors differed so much.

Time to dig deeper.

Does this hold as true for software as hardware?

Yep, compressor architecture is varied.
Getting people to even agree what Attack and Release actually are is interesting.
Even Ratios are just a arbitrary guide to what is actually happening.
And how compressors act as they approach the threshold, again, is different.
Feed forward, feedback, vari mu......

Compression is a very very deep subject.
If you think you understand it, you probably don`t fully.

As an update on the ear training... I've been doing at least an hour a day for the past few days and the difficulty does not seem to scale with the increase in 'levels'
