Thought you guys might like to have a look. Surgeon discusses a set for boiler room that incorporated modular.

wow, that is cool. the thing looks a bit unwieldy but i suppose after you learn you way around it's okay. i still don't like the fact you need to part that whole bush of cables every time you want to do something. anyway, i suspect he can make a few tin cans, plastic tubs with some sticks sound good.

yeah, euro is smaller than you imagine. every time i get a new module i'm always surprised at how much smaller it is than i imagined. it's definitely not ergonomic. sometimes you have a bad cable and suddenly the sound gets funggled, you gotta hunt for the bad one. also getting to a control when your system is heavily patched can be frustrating. a complex patch can be a ball ache to adjust a few days down the line, having to recall what is doing what...

still, i think it's the most fun you can have with electricity and your pants on.

You wiggle muffs with your pants on?!

Good stuff. Want to get into modulars as well, don't really have the money for it now.
Especially annoying if you look a setups like Surgeon's.
I always figured it would be nice to just add 1 or 2 units every once in a while and spread the cost, but a decent
starter set up would set me back at least €700 I would imagine?

id say more for a starter set up once you've factored in the case. plus its totally god damn addictive and developing at a scary rate. I'm fucking hooked mind...

Yeah I looked around a bit. Seems to come closer to 1500 and then it's all Doepfer stuff.
No nice bits like Make Noise or Intellijel :D

I guess I could live on the street, but I'd have to power the gear somehow.

If you want to go modular it's really easy to start a set up.
Buy http://www.analoguehaven.com/tiptopaudi ... endingkit/
$150. ;)
Now you have 1x3HU rack with power.
To start: Add a filter of your choice. Lots to select from there cheap to expensive.
Now start adding modules as you see fit. Maybe an oscillator and envelope next or a second filter or maybe some more of the esoteric west cost stuff like make noise. Just be sure to support the Canadian economy by adding some Intellijel at siome point.

Once you have filled your 3 U add a second HEK. Fill that and you can build your own case out of wood to save some cash. Plus it's custom.

If money is an issue...
Get on Muffwiggler: ask lots of question and make yourself known a little.( so people don't think you are a scammer) Then start buying modules used from other members on the board in the buy/sell/trade section.

One last thing. It's called Eurocrack for a reason. You've been warned!
Best of luck. :D

I'm interested in a modular now, especially seeing surgeon use one and hearing some interesting sounds. Not just the usual bleeps but some nice distorted and aggressive shizzle.

That's definitely the route I'd like to take.

I know nothing about modular kits. Is it to just have a crazy effects modular and no synth parts? Just to run external audio through?

The happendingkit (HEK) is a small case for your modules to sit in. there's an image attached of one. it needs a power supply.

if you DIY minded you could build your own case and buy some rails to screw the modules in and then add the power supply.

some modules are sold in kit format. meaning it's PCB, components and a faceplate and you solder it yourself. almost all can be bought pre-built. i by only pre-built cause i solder like a blind man and don't have hours of life to waste. that means i often up to pay 3 times what a DIYer will.

go to modulargrid.net or more specifically http://www.modulargrid.net/e/modules/br ... der=newest

click on the eyeball next to any module that grabs your fantasy. there you'll find some detail about the module.

you are now officially fucked.

^^ modular grid was the gateway to my addiction. muff-wiggler is bloody great too if your looking for info, i spent hours looking through old threads once i had an idea what i wanted. I'm over 18u deep now but i didn't have any other hardware and i was basically attacking from the angle of re-creating an entire out-of-the-box studio, so thinking about it it could be done a lot cheaper. if you do have any modules in mind and want to ask please shout..

nah i'm currently doing everything with modular, i have all my oscillators, envelopes, VCA's, filters, drum modules, sequencers in my rack. but no money at all.

...thats not to say you couldn't just use it for effects and processing, i just wanted to build a more traditional kind of techno setup but with modular.

something that is quite interesting with the whole modular thing at the moment is the digital stuff. I started it thinking totally analogue but there are modules like the shapeshifter which are pretty revolutionary in terms of hardware.

same story here :)

next on my list was my 3rd 9u cos I'm totally out of room with modules spare but Wowa gave me the heads up he's building res-4's right now (i do like the hard stuff :)...

I have a shapeshifter but have barely scratched the surface, i need to just sit down one night(week) and do nothing but shapeshifter. I heard some amazing stuff the other day where someone was feeding a shapeshifter through an erbe-verb and back into its self to create some amazing ambient drone stuff with just the two modules. Would love an erbe-verb at some point too talking about the digital stuff, i see Tony surgeon is quite heavily into it. I got the Basimilus Iterius last month which i can't recommend enough either.
