If this list was retitled list 3 things that stop you being a good sprinter/footballer/basketballer

Many of us would say ‘talent’ as no.1

I’m sorry to say, but I disagree with the statement that ‘if you can believe you can achieve... that’s bullshit.

I’m okish at producing. Not great and I’m certainly not talented.

I mean, I can spend the hours getting better, but unfortunately not many of us will be ‘good’
this 100%. some are just born to be musicians. but it can also be a trap: super talents more than often end up as jazz backing musicians and reduce themselves to be 'merely' technical very good. well, it's a long debate around technical talent vs creativity which might be for another thread.

3. The dreaded self doubt. I try to do my own thing most of the time, but that creates doubts and I question if it is musically and technically any good. Which is silly really as it's a very subjective matter.

Yep. Make a loop, shit bangs. Waiting for track to render, listen to other people's stuf, my shit sucks. Well, that's my experience anyway.
Yeah spot on! Fucking soundcloud weekly does the thing for me, however i’m trying to stay away from music listening when i’m producing, the only way i can listen to it is when i’m out or in workplace :D

Oh, I totally agree.

I was referring to me lacking talent. Watching that Dillinja vid that John posted made me realise, it's like watching a pro footballer. Sure they practice shit-loads, but they were awesome from they were 5 years old.

So whilst I'll always get better with practice (as will everyone) I'll never be as good as a professional, even if I spent the same amount of time learning.
but hey, it's only techno: 2 or 3 notes on a synth, a kick drum, some hats and you're done 8-)

1) Instead of just finishing more tracks and getting stuff down to develop my own sound. I'm still trying to chase the stagnant fart left behind by the early detroit techno/ early 90's warp GPR era music - obsessing on working out how (for example) Juan got that sound on X record or why after all these years I still love the melodies from the early Black dog albums.

2) Trying to learn mastering/mixing techniques rather than finish more tracks (that stuff can come later).

3) Time - I only work on track 15 mins here and there - some work out most don't.

Recently a mate came around the house, and asked about all this music I have been making the past 25 years. So we had a dig in the old files, and I was rather surprised by some of my very old tracks, actually throughout all those years. If I go back to 1995, it wasn't too far of stuff like Sheet One or Musik by Plastikman, or Waveform transmission by Mills (my first techno albums). What I was lacking those days was a mentor. Someone saying that the dynamics are all wrong (because you know nothing), this or that will work better if you do it like that...
I was/am too shy and humble to walk up to a person who knows his shit.

Since joining Subsekt, my tracks sound at least half way decent and I rock harder as ever before in my little private universe! And gotten a more diverse view on this world, lets not forget!
So a mellow thanks to all contributors!!!

3 - The small child who currently resides in the room next door. I can't make anything at any volume after 7pm. Not great in the week when I don't get in from work until half 6.
Start making lullabies?

Bad situation. Do you have good headphones though?

Those AKG 701s are really comfortable & sounds 'right'. There's noise spill cos they're open back.. but thankfully no bass. Maybe that's a compromise? G
I'm actually trying to make some music for Yoga    The track I was making at the time had a HEFTY (prolly too loud) kick in it, with lots of sub going on.

I have some Sennie HD650's, which I've not used for a long time. I don't even know how good they are. I have some Etymotic ER4-XR's but I don't want to use them all the time.
I'm tempted to try the 701's, they won't break the bank. I'll find out when they are moving firs though, might not be too far away.

@ jordanneke, the funny thing is that you are one of the people that comes to mind when I wrote my post. I think you are a great producers and so do a lot of my friends. The sytle of house you produce is something that has been missing in house for a long time, to bad it's not being published.
