Reese Bass (How to do thread)

Post by TomasHD »

I know many of you hate this kind of threads, since there's a lot useful tips around the forum, but I haven't found accurate techniques for doing this kind of sound. i can make a standard "mainstream" reese bass with NI Massive but not this broody, dark sort of reese (I believe its a reese bassline)

Basically i found this couple of tracks that have the sound i am after:

around 2:01 (more like a lead rather than a proper bassline)
youtu.be/1n7CRPX80Zw

It starts around 0:55 (totally different style haha)

youtu.be/sPpzOyD4Kn8

Thanks a lot

There's stuff on this here already, nearly sure, but not something that interests me much ..

Go search the old posts on the Grid at dogsonacid.com. They know everything possible about Reese basses.

I don’t think that’s an actual Reese, it’s bit sustained. Here’s what you do, start with two saw waves, retune one against the other. That was just a super short saw stab. To sound like that first one scoop some mids out of it, reverb to taste.

For the sustained stuff, you gotta chuck two saws in a sampler, detune to taste, either make them really long or set loop points, use legato so you slide from note to note. That’s the basics, everything else is icing on the cake.

Yeah, that's more like a detuned stab.

That's it in a nutshell. You can get better results using more waveforms, imo, and don't just use saws. Detuned wavetable scanning is basically the cornerstone of loads of bass music sub-genres. Automate notch filters going through the sound for more movement and add loads of FX over multiple resampling passes for a more DnB-like sound.

Look into 'dungeon' dubstep production techniques. I hate the name but it's the easiest search term, Kryptic Minds-esque.

Why use a sampler?
Wouldn't it be simpler to just use a synth?
Am I missing something?

Great useful tips, thank you all. (What i love about these particular sound, is the modulation, it feels like a low deep growl)

I got the same Void's question about using a sampler, why would you use it? I tried it out but it loses quality somehow

You can use a synth, samplers were just routinely used for two reasons, resamplimg and “playing” loop points...like when you play a higher note, it repeats quicker than a lower pitched.

Overrated Gimps?that seems apt  .i used to like Noisia, but i think they are very overrated now and haven't done a decent tune in almost a decade

The 1st one is square waves (sounds like the Juno to me,or a sound you could coax quite easily out of a Juno)detuned square waves, chorus, reverb, bit of saturation

2nd is similar to the 1st except for the fact it probably is detuned saw waves through a lowpass filter

Void, this is why using the sampler is key. With the old DnB keys, the secret was the modulation matrix on those EMUs, well that and the Z-plane. This might not be a reese specific tutorial, but it was definitely killing it with the FM nuero modulations...Definitely applies. One of the better Ableton specific tutorials on it I have seen.

I thought the reason why you would sample a bass was to avoid dealing with a synth that doesn't reset its oscillators?

I mean sure you can use a sampler, it was done back then because budget studios used what they can.
But then you are stuck with the fact that when you change a samples pitch you change the sample rate.

Very easy to just reach for a synth and do it clean these days.
