It depends.. on modular i use a keyboard, but i am not good at playing in scale.
In ableton i mostly draw in the notes. As i know how to "calculate" chords, it is way more harmonic as playing on keyboard. May sound not sexy to everyone, but who cares - i like math.

I never had/have melodies in my head, just try and error.
over.

It's a strange combination... . For most people the last thing to drive a modular setup would be keys.

1)Controller keys for more expression - perhaps a call and response kind of passage.

2)Virtual sequencer that can be pre-tuned to a set of notes before randomization for sustained riffs or ostinatos. There is no fuss with so called wrong notes if you have a quantizer. I didn't mess with Reason's randomize function in the Matrix device until they released a CV tuner otherwise yeah randomization is pretty pointless.

James. I feel you brah.

Hades sent me quite a few videos on 'basic music theory'. I think he felt pity on my one fingered attempt at progressions.

I used to use ableton's chord thing and a midi keyboard. Now I just use a midi keyboard and play the chords myself.
