Roman Poncet - Hydralic Jack synth
Roman Poncet - Hydralic Jack synth
Hey guys looking for some help.
I hate being 'that guy' asking for a how to but I really want to know if anyone has any guesses on how its created.
Ive tried so far with abletons analog using saw waves(both detuned and non detuned) with a bit of noise and playing with the resonance and envelope on the filter to create that chugging like sound, but got absoltely no where close.

I also noticed something quite similar on Mattias' tool techno kit, but with less attack. (If youre willing to share Mattias)

around 00:25 ish.
Thanks guys for any help.

Re: Roman Poncet - Hydralic Jack synth
Ableton's Analog doesn't have the fattest filters, what you need is a nice dirty analog-style lowpass or bandpass filter with some snappy envelope modulation. You can do this with any basic synth saw wave and Cytomic The Drop with a decent amount of drive. Try Operator, it has the filter models from The Drop. Some extra EQ and saturation afterwards helps to give it that really dirty filtered down sound.

Brilliant thanks guys, will try some stuff tomorrow after work and report back.

Sat for twenty minutes failed miserably
Dont think copying synthesis is my strong point..
For anyone who wants a laugh or can give me some critique,
Think it lacks the automation of the filter envelope and I dont think im getting the correct midi...

Re: Roman Poncet - Hydralic Jack synth
You are really overthinking this based on that clip, the noise comes from the distortion.
With Operator:
1) play a basic minor 7th on a lower octave, maybe 4 or 5 short stabs per bar
2) basic saw wave oscillator, fairly quick attack & release
3) engage filter, any of the models will do, maybe 30-40% resonance, drive the shit out of the filter maybe 7-10db
4) filter down to somewhere around 300-700hz with a 24db slope, don't even need to fancy envelope
5) a bit of synced cutoff LFO modulation
6) add delay & reverb to taste
7) ???
8) profit

Cheers man think this got me in a better ball park. Still quite far off, but I like setting myself little challenges like this to work on my synthesis knowledge, but I had no idea how to get that noise from the filter so thanks.
First part mattias second part mine.
Think I got the filter envelope a bit wrong but I had already bounced to audio by then, also sounds like a phaser on it??

Sounds like you played the chord too high and the resonance is a bit too much and the envelope is a bit tight, there's this click on the beginning. Mattias' chord also has a much more bandpassed sound.
Here's my take, not 100% but I did in 3 minutes, it's literally just Operator, 7th chord saw wave with a 24db bandpass filter and a shit ton of drive and lo/hi pass EQ afterwards. No envelope modulation, the filter modulation I did by hand via clip automation.
