Had a few days with it now and I think overall it's a great update. The new devices are superb, I really think drum buss is going to stop a lot of questions about how to make kicks sound good. The pedal effect is a big improvement on overdrive and Echo is going to be all over a lot of records in the future. I've not played much with the wavetable synth, but the tables themselves are nice and I hope they get exported so I can use them in Serum.

The big wins are definitely all the changes to the workflow, they're all fairly small in themselves but add up to a much better quality of life when using the app. Automation doesn't make me want to pull teeth any more, navigation is easier and having favourites in the browser makes things a lot quicker. All the best stuff looks like it's in arrangement mode which I haven't dug into yet as I'm suffering from a bit of loopitis at the minute and haven't got a project I'm using that mode for yet. CPU use doesn't seem any different to Live 9 and the UI does seem to feel a little snappier.

Overall I think I'm happy with what they've done, going back to 9 felt weird after using 10 for a few days, so I'm going to get in on the pre-order while there's 20% off.

That's always the evil intention behind the free sample

It sounds bloody great. Very pleased with those CPU reports.

Will be interesting to see what the 10.x updates add to the party also.

I am still waiting for a midi implementation overhaul, did not change that much since Ableton 1 / 1.5. But that update will also come, I hope. :)

I'm sorry, but from what I remember of the top of my head,
I don't think MIDI got implemented into Live earlier than version 4 or 5.

Thanks for correction!

unfortunately I am old enough, but I didn't start using Live from as soon as it was made
(just like a lot of people of course).
I remember one of my best friends had to explain to me what the advantages were (the session view!!!),
and why the hell I should switch from cubase to Live,
and why the fuck did it look so horrible ffs ??? :D

so I only started using Live from version 5,
but Live did only start originally as an audio loop tool,
and I remember a friend of mine saying they only threw in MIDI from version 4 or so.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
In any case, no way they were already implementing MIDI in Live from version 1, simply no way.
They didn't even plan to implement MIDI at all originally.

I was at Loop last year, and at some point I had a talk with Gerhard Behles and Robert Henke,
and one of the things that struck me most was that Gerhard said that it wasn't until they were already a few years into the making of Live that they actually thought about making money out of it at all.
It was literally their little private project that just got out of hand and became immensely popular.

You are correct, as far as we declare musicradar.com a reliable source.

http://www.musicradar.com/tuition/tech/ ... ive-357837

Quote:
Versions two and three, released late in 2002 and 2003 respectively, fine-tuned the formula without making radical changes. With the release of version 4, though, Ableton Live really came of age. Released in the summer of 2004, Live 4 was the biggest overhaul of the program since its introduction.

Without doubt, the most exciting new feature was the introduction of MIDI sequencing. For the first time, Live users could work with virtual instruments (VST for Windows, VST and AU for Mac) and record and edit MIDI note information.

Also Julian Bayle published many python source codes for remote control scripts, but a standardized API for midi control script developers would be also great! :)
Anyways, the in-depth Max4Live support is really, really cool.

thx, I tried to find that back earlier on and couldn't find any detailed info except for like 500 links on how to use MIDI in Live... :)
Guess you're a better google ninja than me (which is just another proof of my age)

Yeah I'm normally suspicious of all-in-one processing devices but drum buss seems to make it ridiculously easy to beef up drums and kicks. It still has enough controls to make it useful though.
