VCV Rack

Post by Ben84 »

Hi!

Recently I discovered VCV Rack, It's like a modular eurorack... but for windows, mac and linux!
It's free open source software and in constant development currently at version 0.4, for the moment it's stand alone but with version 1.0 there will be a vst wrapper. Because it's open source everybody can develop modules... really a dream for modular geeks like me who don't have the funds for the real thing or also ideal for people who want to buy a real module but want to test it first.

This is the official website: https://vcvrack.com/

Good website for people who want to dive for the first time in modular synthesis: https://www.synthesizers.com/tutorials.html

I really like VCV Rack. I really like open source project in general. This instrument was released first in September public if I am correct, did not bother myself back then, but it's soon December and version 0.5 is out.

I used it with Ableton. Routed a channel out of it, processed it through VCV and then sent it back to Ableton. Also I sent out MIDI data to VCV and controlled the sequences easily. Worked like a charm, it was stable, latency did not bother me, just delayed the channel's playback in Ableton.

The VCV user group grew to 5000 members recently, and it is constantly growing. This grow is the "thing" I found fascinating. The group is well moderated and are many discussions. This week I can't count how many developers contributed to the whole project. By the end of the 0.X state of this project, this will be a great instrument and I hope this community will also stay fresh and friendly.

If you get caught on the guerilla spirit of open source modular, you will have a great time, whether you are only willing to explore the sounds or also develop your own modules.
