moving from logic to ableton > any tips for ableton noob?

Post by slavink »

Hey y'all,

I've been a Logic Pro user since 5 years and a ProTools user before that,
I'd like to dive into Ableton now, but the workflow is pretty different, can't really get my head around it.

The way I work in Logic is pretty much audio-based, just placing bits of audio on the timeline.
All the tonal aspects of a track I do with soft synths so that's pretty much the same in the same in all DAWs i guess.
But I rarely use soft synths or samplers for drums, just audio.
I must say I don't really understand the concept of the clip launcher.

Does anyone has some tips or good tutorials to share?

Allright thanks

Hey Man,

Welcome to the site!

I was logic for ages & moved to ableton 100% in the last year pretty much.

There are honestly loads of cool vids on YT - Link to the thread in the hole for some fav's: http://subsekt.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=43

The clip launcher thing.. essentially lets you play the horizontal entire line (scenes) 1, 2, 3, etc.. individually. If you assign buttons or numbers to these "scenes" - you can jam them. You can record this into the arrange if you want.. so you could have scene 1 the intro.. scene 2 the same with a new element.. and so on. Theres other fancy shit you can do with clips, that allow you to get them triggering themselves going up & down vertically with follow on commands (which are located in the clip itself).. but thats probably another days work.

Cheers,

John

Theres actually a pretty interesting tut here: which shows how great the clips are:

Don't forget you can rewire Live into Logic. It's an amazingly powerful combination if your computer can handle it.

1. Work in Arrangement view for everything! Unless your preparing or using Ableton for a Live set.

2. Track Delays in arrangement are on the right side of the track! Use them.

3. In arrangement you can chop duplicate delete parts of wav clips like editing .

4. CMD Z hotkey is your friend.

5. Learn the hotkeys and you will save loads of time.

6. Stay organized bounce label and group your tracks!

good luck

Yeah learning the hot keys is a really good thing to do. I was always just trying to get tracks finished so only really concentrated on that but now I've taken the Time to learn hot keys it really speeds things up!
