I've had an insane few months moving to the UK from Vietnam but now I finally have a room to set up a studio with.... MONITORS, at last!

I've read through this thread but I guess we're a couple of years down the line now since the bulk of this conversation happened.

I have just under a grand for a pair and the space is small so my question is this - are the best 6/7" actives at that price still the Presonus S6s? Any others to consider nowadays?

How small is small? And do you have treatment in your room (you should if it's small).

It's a small single bedroom. 2.5m x 3.7m with some big wardrobes taking up 20% of the back of the space.

No treatment yet, I've just moved in so I don't even have a desk. I'll be putting a table along the 2.5m wall that's clear of wardrobes and yeah I'll have to do it on a bit of a shoestring initially but I will be treating the room.

Yeah, I'm not sure anything is around more ideal for a small room at that price.
The S6's are tight, and the dual concentric nature really helps with imaging in less than ideal spaces.

It's a small single bedroom. 2.5m x 3.7m with some big wardrobes taking up 20% of the back of the space.

Side note: Just fill up the wardrobes on the back wall and leave them open when producing. Definitely not professional, but for sure better than closed doors with flat surface that will reflect. Maybe you got more furniture that you can use like treatment for you room? And get a measurement mic + rew room wizard for best results.

Hey Howie, I've been also in the hunt for monitors for the past month, and ended up ordering the pioneer rm-07. Slightly pricier thant the sceptres but worth giving them a look.

I´ll also add Lyd7 Dynaudio and Shape 65 Focal if you´re not a fan of coaxial

Cheers, I'm going shopping on Saturday so I'll try a few out but I'm definitely tilting towards these.

Man, now that's some goddamn common sense right there!

I welcome any and all low cost or free room treatment ideas like this - I'm blowing all remaining disposable post move-in money on cdjs/mixer, production monitors and an audio interface.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep an open mind but my budget is pretty inflexible and I've heard that coaxial speakers generally have a more achievable "sweet spot" in awkward little rooms like mine.

Might as well get the Scepter 8 instead.

Wow thanks for that, I'm also moving to a 4x4.5m room, that's gonna be useful!
Hijacking this to ask about arrangement. In said room, entrance is in a corner on one 4.5 wall. Across it is the terrace door and a big ass window next to it. Right 4m wall is free, the left one has a big unmovable wardrobe with a desk table built into it, and a smaller movable one. And there's a gas furnace next to the entrance door. I'd love to give it a bit of diy treatment in the next few months, but don't know hnow how to arrange it which should come first. Original, without a thought idea was to put the pc on the wardrobe desk, but now it doesn't really seem like a good idea.

too much for a small room, the S8`s really put out a surprising amount of bass

If it were a 12" I'd maybe agree.

HAve you heard them? They put out a LOT of bass, they have a lot more oomph than your average 8inch nearfield, they almost sound like midfields.
Way too much for a small bedroom. 10`s would be waaaaay too much, let alone 12`s.
I don`t know what they did, the porting is acting like a line array or something, but yeah, the lows are very powerful, you can use these without a sub.

6`s are much tighter for something like a small bedroom, at least on these speakers.

To be honest the S6s are £840 a pair in my local shop, the S8s are £1440. Quite a difference for me and if the S6s are supposed to suit a smaller room better then it's all pointing in one direction for me.

I have neighbours right behind where the speakers will go too so monitoring volumes are going to stay pretty low

Small rooms VS big speakers are sort of a myth thing. I've been visiting a lot of rooms the past 8 months and had good chats with proper room designers (as well as listening to others rooms and speakers).
You'd be surprised how big speakers some people have with great success in relatively small-ish rooms. I've had several pairs of hi end speakers in all sorts of sizes in my own room for extensive testing during the last year as well and I've been harassing the manufacturers. It's quite amazing how well a pair of Barefoot MM27 works super close for example (didn't buy those speakers but tested them and narrowed them down a lot for testing).

What are you smoking today man?
It's not a myth at all, pretty much all prevailing acoustic science would disagree with you.

You can hardly stick a set of of full range TAD Ref Ones in a small 3 meter room and expect no issues.
The amount of treatment you would need to get anything like an accurate low end from anything under 150hz in a small bedroom like room would eat up all the room.

Howie has a 2.5 X 3.7 room that's not far outside the worst possible or "demon" dimensions.
Nodes will be problem, no way around that.
You stick a big fuckin speaker in that room and you are just throwing out problems for the room to create.
That's just the low end, not even talking about early reflections, transient smearing etc.

Sure you CAN stick fuck off big 10 or 12 inch woofer loaded speakers in a little room. But you are asking for problems. The physics don't lie.

Come on man, that's talking about a small control room in the context of a treated professional studio dealing with 85db spl standard listening (I'm assuming at midfield, unless the man is fucking deaf) and having full range. Not a small bedroom dealing with nearfield monitoring.

Who the fuck is going to be mixing long term in a home bedroom at 85db spl and not expect the neighbours to come crashing through the front door.

That's way out of context for what we are talking about here.

It's all relative isn't it? I mean I tested the Barefoot MM27 with subs at 1m distance for fun and it worked ace. One can easily have those in bed room studio
