So far I've been doing my field recordings with the iPhone built in recorder, i feel its quite adequate but am interested to hear others opinions when its compare with recordings from Zoom hd recorders such as the Zoom H1. Is there much of a difference in quality?

It's a huge difference man. If you like to record your own sound getting a dedicated handyrecorder is very recommended.

Here is a link to the archived thread, some good recommendations in there.

If you want decent frequency response and dynamic response then a proper field recorder is what you need.

Stereo recordings on the Zoom sound cool too cos you have seperate mics ..

Would highly recommend it, I own a Zoom H5 and it's serving me well, but mainly because I'm the type of person who uses lots of field recordings and foley like sounds in my music.

A smartphone works in a pinch and it's a nice intro to the process, but if you use it a lot I'd say that's a good indicator that a dedicated recorder would be a good investment.

I have an H2N and I'm always blown away by how well it captures the environment when I listen back - which isn't necessarily an endorsement of the H2N itself, but just of recorders in general. I haven't really compared it to anything else.
