Well, when I tune percussion or any other thing I wish to tune I just listen to the sounds and tune them to fit in scale/ tune / timbre. No need to no what key a sound is in really.

But you can always slap on a synth plug or so and play notes till you find one that is close to the percussion sound and go from there.

So, let's say I have a kick in the key of A. I know it's in A cause the highest fundamental is at 55.1 in a spectrum analyzer.

Then let's say I decide I'm going produce the track in the key of A natural minor. That mean includes: A B C D E F G

So any of my Porc can have it's highest fundamental in any of these keys.

This is what I use.. Voxengo Span. Have it on the master.

Solo what you want.. Hover your cursor over whatever bit of the spectrum & it'll give you the freq & musical pitch.

Having a a little chord chart is pretty good too. I've something similar to this taped in front of me.

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere, but I find this in combination with Ableton's Spectrum really handy:

I dunno to me it sounds like one is over-complicating things with charts, spectrum analyzers and similar to tune stuff?
Maybe I'm too much of a "musician" I dunno.

I don't always trust my ears, but I give them the final say.

I do as a few others have already suggested: use either Live's Spectrum Analyzer or Voxengo's SPAN to find the note of a sound and then go from there re: matching other sounds.

Yeah, by ear generally.
With percussion sometimes the sound is a little too complex to read in a analyzer, and sometimes, the psychoacoustic effect of all the transients makes the apparent key of the sound different to the technical display.

Plus, tuning all your percussion to the same note leaves a very odd feeling to the mix, you just want the sound to be in the same key as the tune. I generally tune my percussion so that it plays a melodic little riff, it adds to the harmonic richness of your tunes then.

Just read this "Perfect tuning is very important, especially with drums. If even just one tone is out of place, you can sometimes lose up to 4dB of signal and you're left wondering why the drums aren't punchy or sound nervous or disharmonious." here https://www.ableton.com/articles/phono-black-boulder/

can anyone explain why this (the up to 4dB loss) would be the case?

I honestly would discard what he says there, discordant drums can be very important in techno, and as long as you process carefully, should give you no problems.

I agree.

Just for fun use a default sine wave on pretty much any synth (Operator for instance) at G0, make a pattern on each beat, duplicate the patch to a new track and listen to them both - No difference really except in loudness. NOW, detune (the fine knob) one of them just a bit. Now you'll have an awesome discordant throbbing bass. A great start for a track or simply good ear training practice.

BTW about samples, for percussion it sometimes helps to pitch things way up and match / tune em to a pure synth sound. Easier to hear the fundamental at higher pitches sometimes.
