Thing's That Go Clang, Clank & Bang. Metallic Hits.
I usually get a triangles &/or squares in operator, mess about with the fine, amount & filter. I find it's a case of trial & error. Also have got ok results from modulating the oscillator's pitch or filter with a fast ms LFO.
Been messing around a little with ring modulation, but things get wild fairly fast. Would be interested if anyone has a consistent way of approaching clang-y or clankin' hits as opposed to making a kinda metallic lead sound as that kinda edge is fairly easy to obtain with FM. If that makes sense

you mean like those industrial-style amble/hammer hits in reverb?..
but you want to synthesize them instead of put a sample through verb?

Maybe try using Collision or Corpus? I guess with FM you could try synthesising a typical bell like tone and trying to make it sound rougher with some tweaking of the operators.

Anything.. Everything haha! Always interested in conversation. Let's have a good chat about it man. Tell me more

Take a nazi (or one of these ISIS cowards), put a metal bucket on his head, take a sledgehammer and throw it against the bucket, sample it, set ADSR, add reverb and voila...here you go.

Yep, that's how I always do it myself these days. Thanks for sharing that neat trick over a bottle Jäger at abandoned children hospitals in Warsaw.Mono-xID wrote:Take a nazi (or one of these ISIS cowards), put a metal bucket on his head, take a sledgehammer and throw it against the bucket, sample it, set ADSR, add reverb and voila...here you go.

Chromaphone is really good at making these kind of metallic hits. Collision in Ableton is essentially the same synth without the fancy interface. It's truly an invaluable plugin for heavy percussive techno.

Thanks men!

I really suggest you to try the "nazi/ISIS coward in a metal bucket pounded with a sledgehammer"-method. It sounds more organic and is somewhat more "alive" if you know what i mean. Try different velocities with the hammer, sounds superb !!!!

I personally like field recordings in abandoned warehouses, then thicken up with layering of many hits.
They just recently tore down my favourite Montreal warehouse, boo-urns. We called it our "beach" because of the number of times we'd hang out half-naked on its gravel roof.

I like sticking real sounds into samplers or gran synths. If you're looking for the creme de la creme of clanks, scrapes, swipes, and whatever the hell else - it's harder to do better than this guy.

if you don't have a bucket you can download various bucket VSTs...but if you ask me, they don't sound as nice as the real deal and now shhh... you don't want the bay going crazy
sample -> reverb(go crazy here) -> resample -> sampler (go crazy again)
