External effects with your DAW

Post by Críoch »

Anyone using external hardware fx / pedals.. whatever.. with their DAW

I've got a Saffire LE soundcard, so will be cool when my Boss SE50 comes. However, as its going to be the 1st bit of hardware fx that I hook up to my computer.. just would like to know if anyone else is using anything / what you have / any advice.

What are the pros & cons. Do hardware fx sound better than software?

You very often hear that debate with synths.. but I dont know about it in regard to plugins.

I have some external effects but I feed them from the sends on my mixer because I don't have a sound card with multiple ins / outs.

I think each of the external fx have some decent sweet spots. I have a couple of old delays which sounds great but they're unwieldily compared to automatable VST FX. I have a yamaha multi fx similar to the boss one you're getting which I run my x0xb0x through and the reverb on it rules.

It makes a difference driving them from an external mixer because of the hands on control. Sending sends back into themselves is good for reverb and delay effects too. You can get right on the edge of feedback for interesting results.

You should be able to do that with the multi ins / outs on your saffire and a control surface.

Cool Sam.

Yeah to the unwieldy aspect .. thats a concern. Also not looking forward to the menu system on this thing. Never used one before.. so can say its bad (or good) but I can just imagine scrolling through crap to change something by a fraction. So much more instant on the software.

Fuck it.. it'll be a bit of fun. Still very interested to hear the difference.

I used to have several boxes for this but these days there is so much quality in the box. However some units can be hard to replace. Stuff I still use are some reverbs from Lexicon, delays from Yamaha and API + DBX compressor / gates. I have a wicked little mono channel tube EQ also that work wonders on sounds. Sometimes I scan the second hand market to see if I can get me a nice little box for a good penny though hehe.

Back in my industrial band days we ran everything through stupid amounts of effects.

I think the only external effects that really can`t be duplicated are when you start chaining overdrives and distortions.
You`d get lovely feedback and signal degredation that you just can`t seem to simulate easily with in-the-box stuff.

I have finally found some good vst that are good for creating feedback and signal fuck ups.

Please share ;)

I used to in an industrial band called Spazm - we conned our way of getting a gig in Ronnie Scotts - then NME wrote a review on it with a headline 'Is this the End of Music' I was the proudest man alive that week :)
