Powered USB Hub
There are so many to choose from - but looking for rugged one that I would be able to gig with any recommendations
Re: Powered USB Hun
I've not tried too many, but the D-Link DUB-H4 is ok.
The thing to remember with a usb hub is that it will add some latency, how much will depend on what you have plugged into it. You canuse the DPC latency tester to check how much difference it makes:

A better option might be either a PCMCIA or Cardbus USB card such as this:

Yeah I just wanted too see if Ant was awake or not
But Ant surely the card will draw the power away from the laptop >
Re: Powered USB Hub
Ha, you all know me too well
It will draw power from the laptop, so if you are using the laptop from battery it will affect it. But if the laptop is on mains, which it really should be if you are performing live, it won't matter.
What it does do is add another bus. The maximum throughput on USB is per bus, not per port. Adding hub just shares out that throughput, rather than adding to it. It might not make any difference if you just have controllers on the hub, but if you have hard drives or audio interfaces it could make a really big difference. Also if your laptop's built in USB don't have individual USB busses it will just make things worse (I’m not sure if they still do this though).

Re: Powered USB Hub
Ok cheers - I was thinking off getting this
http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_5742_W ... on.asp#top
Any opinions - I could probable stretch too 600 if needed
Will be exclusive for Dj and live work
Ideally would like to run Live, Maschine and Traktor - with some virtual midi program - with my S4

Re: Powered USB Hub
Yeah, that looks ok. The only thing I noticed is that it has the i5 430m, which is the old i5. The sandy bridge processors are a lot faster, infact an i3 sandy bridge has a good chance of being faster than an old i5.
For example (from here: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php)
CPU Name................................Passmark CPU Mark.................................Rank
................................................(higher is better)...........................(lower is better)
Intel Core i5 460M 2.53GHz.................2327........................................347
Intel Core i3-2330M 2.20GHz................2749.......................................289
Take a look at these:
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Tim ... ersion.asp
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Lenovo_G ... ersion.asp
Or this has the sandy bridge i5, with 8GB Ram for £600
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Asp ... ersion.asp
Actually that last one is a lot better than the others.

Re: Powered USB Hub
Oh damn, looking nice. Sadly either sold out or n/a in my region (The Netherlands). Also many look-a-likes in the USB Hub apparently.. Hard to find the good ones and ones that have their cables on the right side...
